I thought it might be a good idea to start a news thread specifically for TWPZ.

To start off this thread 'Isha' the Sumatran Tiger (b. Melbourne, 2008, Ramalon x Binjai) is going to be sent to France later this month.

So this would leave Ramalon, Binjai and her sibling(s), do you know if/when she is leaving and the exact place?

It will be Le Parc Des Felines, near Paris. They are also importing a male from Honolulu who she will probably be paired with

Great news for the EEP :D

Although i'm a huuuuge elephant person, her wnd her son Juara are my favourite animals at the zoo. She was old but still felt like id been kicked in the guts when i heard. Sel will be missed.

The baby siamang has been named 'Lima' meaning five in Indonesian.

And, rather unexpectedly appropriately :D, it means 'talker' in coastal Quechua, the language of the people native to the area that is now the capital of Peru.

New Mixed exhibit

For the past 17 months, camels have been introduced to the African elephant. Both species are now on display and this is the first time that an Australasian zoo has produced this exhibit. Circuses in Australia have kept camels with Asian elephant historically. A handful of zoo's in the Northern hemisphere have mixed exhibits with elephants of both species for the past 20 + years This initiative was to provide the elephant with some stimulation/company since the loss of her herdmate 20 months ago. It also provides visitors with a unique mixed exhibit to view and learn about. Just cost a bit of staff time and effort, priceless.

Well, could be. I formyself would like it much more if they would introduce more African elephants instead of joining them with the camels. I have seen TWPZ as there were (at least) 3 African elephants, and it felt a little like being in the Tsavo park in Kenya again. What a great (not to say unique) location for a big (african like) herd of African elephants could TWPZ (and many other spacious zoological parks in OZ) be, if there were not that high financial and administrational hurdles....

PS: For those who will say now that TWPZ is focussing on Asian elephants and so the permanent post of elephants is done already, I have to say: Savannah Animals like African elephants would fit much better to TWPZ then forest dwelling like Asian E. Also, there is enough space for both species and enough space to avoid or minimize contact between the animals/keepers in regard of ele herpes.
