Taronga Zoo Taronga Zoo news 2011

There is a new map of Taronga Zoo on their website today: http://www.taronga.org.au/sites/default/files/web-map-ed1.pdf

I think it looks quite good, nice to see how the new pathways by the entry plaza and between the African animals and big cats work. I don't like the new names "seal walk" and "rainforest trail", for Great Southern Oceans and Wild Asia, are these just on the map, or have these mega-exhibits themselves also been rebranded?

Now that the tree-kangaroos are visible from the entry plaza (or soon will be?) where the dingo enclosure was, what has happened to the tree kangaroo exhibit? Is a new enclosure for dingos going to be built in the future, or have they been deleted from the collection plan? Any ideas where a new exhibit would be built for them?

The Tree kangaroos were nowhere near completion when I was there last month. The Wetland Birds was not open either (although it wouldn't take too long to get it ready). The current tree kangaroo exhibit - according to the map - will be incorporated into the general macropod enclosure.

:p

Agreed - good map and disappointing if they have dropped Great Southern Oceans and Wild Asia names. A couple of things I noted: (i) the Chimps and the Orangs are in the key at their old/future map references rather than current situation; (ii) seems a couple of animals miss out on the "trails" or "shortcuts" - namely the Cassowary and the Crocodiles.

I guess the map is a bit premature then, showing things which aren't finished yet.

I have some other questions:

-The parrot aviary that was above the old seal pools and along from the cassowaries is now a picnic lawn. When did this happen? I can't remember what used to be in this aviary, was it conures?

-The dholes (now only 1.1) are shown as being next to the fennec foxes, is the pair kept together in there? I would of thought that was quite a small exhibit. I take it they are no longer rotated in the sun bear enclosure?

-Are the squirrel monkeys still in with the alligators?

1: The aviary is currently being 'redeveloped'... Apparently
2: They are next to the Fennec Foxes, but they also have the larger exhibit next to it... the one that used to have Flamingoes!
3: Yes!

They appear to be mixed together, but, in fact, the alligators have a separate (front) exhibit while the cotton-top tamarins and squirrel monkeys have the island (back) exhibit, which are separated by angled metal poles. Next time I am at the zoo I will try and get a decent pic for you.

Thanks for the info, but I am a little bit confused. When I visited in 2005 there were 2 flamingoes in the long narrow exhibit next to the Sun Bears, which I think has pygmy hippos in it now. Was there another flamingo exhibit along Big Cat Row somewhere?

Oh ok, thanks for that info, I didn't realise that, and haven't taken any photos of that enclosure. I'm not sure that I realised there were Cotton-top Tamarins in there either, but I might just have forgotten about them. Would like to see photos of it though, thanks.

Thanks for the link.
I don't think these areas are being rebranded; it seems these names are merely for the designed/suggested trails, not the areas/precincts.

This seems to be a completely new approach to visitor information by the zoo and I think it works to an extent. It's attempting to make the zoo easier to experience for visitors; part navigational and part theming.

However, having said that, it's odd that they removed certain features from their map, and certain new aspects of it are sure to confuse visitors.

Visited the zoo two days ago (Sunday 11/09/11). Chimps enclosure is pretty much finished. Chimps home was blocked off, as was the orang -utan exhibit (cable-car revealed the orang exhibit was also empty).
The Parrot aviary above the old seals pool was empty, so no macaws or conures were on display. The long-beaked echidnas echidna's exhibit was empty in the nocturnal house, and the leopard seal was no-where to be seen, there was only a lone fur-seal occupying the exhibit.
Was excited to see the Vic Crowned Pigeon, made me remember visiting the zoo as a child in the 90's and they seemed to be in almost every aviary :). I enjoyed the layout of Southern Oceans, and the new entrance area is great, however felt that the fewer exhibits being replaced by gardens and empty exhibits was very disappointing. Certainly not worth the $44 entry.
