Was at Taronga yesterday - found the Macaws and Agouti. They are in Patrick's old digs opposite the Red Kangaroos.

Also wandered by the Spider Monkeys... and they have a new young male in with the 2 older females. Apparently he's been in there for a couple of weeks now...

What species of Macaws were these? Have any of Patrick's aviary-mates been put on display elsewhere?

Surprised they got a new spider monkey.

Thanks Jabiru, must have missed that. Are any of their conures on display anywhere, they did have quite a variety (and amazons and other macaws as well I think)?

Taronga pretty much took all exotic parrots off display when a few macaws were stolen in 2010. There used to be sun conures (mixed with agouti) across from the komodo dragon exhibit (I think now holding superb parrots, but don't quote me on that!) and also (if I remember correctly) in the old helmore aviary located above the old seal pools (that was demolished when Lemur Forest Adventure was built, but most recently held cockatoos). The helmore aviary definitely at one stage in the mid 2000s have macaws but it may or may not have had conures as well (not too sure, only sort of vaguely remembering).

Helmore had a few different species of conure. I have some photos somewhere ....

They may move the Green Winged Macaws again as there is a hole in the side of the fence. The agouti and the other little parrot are so cute.

As for the spider Monkey {Male}. He will not be breading with the to older female as they are not breading anymore. So are they going to get more. At one stage there they said that when one of the female dies, they were going to remove the other one and leave that space. But now we might be having more. According to the keepers the male is a little bugger.

Christmas Day 2008 I photographed in the Helmore Aviary Nanday, Sun and Crimson-fronted Conures, and Red-lored Amazons.

According to Facebook the new male spider monkey is called Shane. Any idea where he came from? Also which females are still alive. BTW nice pics tdierikx :D

I asked the primate keepers last week actually... Shane is from Dubbo and at this stage he is only temporarily residing at Taronga (Sydney) due to him annoying the hell out of the females there (Dubbo) too much... lol!

I'm hoping that they get in a couple new younger females for him and keep/breed them... they are going to need some extra drawcards when they have moved the cats out methinks... *grin*

Thanks for the compliments on my photos Jabiru96...

{TAKEN FROM THE 2014 THREAD}

-0.1 red panda has arrived from New Zealand

In fact, the female (named Amala) arrived from Bronx Zoo. She will be paired with a male not currently at the zoo (ie. they are bringing in another male)

(Info from the newspaper!)

Poor Mayhem is plenty interested in her too... saw him trying to work out how to get over to her enclosure the other day... lol!

so its officially happening; snow leopards are departing Taronga and are heading north to Port Macquarie permanently.

I no longer an a zoo friends member at taronga and havent visited in a while either so im out of the loop when it comes to news. Why are the snow leopards going? What is going in there?

They plan on expanding the tigers into that whole area.

Of course, plans can change.

As far as is known, they are redeveloping the current big cat area into the "Sumatran Village" - which implies that they will only have tigers back when it's complete.

Movements appear to be the Fennec Foxes moving to where the female Pygmy Hippo used to be, Lions, Snow Leopards, Tigers, Dhole all to other zoos. Sun Bears to stay where they are for now, as Mr Hobbs may not cope with a move too well - still remains to be seen if he copes with construction going on around him...

The Brazilian Tapir has already left, as has Satu the male Sumatran Tiger, the Snow Leopards left this week. The Malayan Tapir is also in question as to a move or not. Looks like the Meerkats are staying - as they've just got in 2 new males.

Looks like construction start is currently set for late this year.
