@Zoofan15 :eek::(:( poor Penguin. Wellington Zoo obviously did a really caring job but its a tough ocean out there hey (fingers crossed for 'Skip').

It’s been good to see Taronga participate in marine rescue through some of their TV series in the past. In many cases, the animal has died - but it’s good they show it’s not always a happy ending (successful release) due to the impact of human activities on these animals - swallowing fish hooks, plastic; being hit by boat propellors etc.
My Mum worked in the press and said it was like a bad comedy show how many debates and discussions revolved around trying to find quick witted snappy titles or comments.

I can imagine. I feel like lions suffer the most from the onslaught of puns - with cubs being their mother’s pride and joy, getting the lion’s share etc; closely followed by giraffes with the birth of any new calf being a tall order.

@Zoofan15

Yeah it's something that do respect that on the tv series hearing they will follow up on telling the viewing audience about the unfortunate ending and think you underlined perfectly the message with that being to remind the audiences of the human impact on the planet reaching all environments and corners if the globe. Think for some of the audience too feeling a loving emotional attachment watching some of say the Seals or Penguins in the marine rescue to end up perishing because of a human encroachment so feeling grief seeing not all happy-endings will help bolster even more people to environmental care vigilance. Remember in 2003 there was this great commercial on tv (dont say that about 99.9% of ads but this one was sweet) where it showed some footage of Taronga's marine rescue and what really liked was they showed a Cormorant (unsure of what specific species) being cared for and then sent on its way when looking better, and really liked they gave some spotlight to another cute critter that didn't automatically have to be a Pinniped or Penguin species for it to get some Taronga marine rescue spotlight.

Lol you had me laughing and shaking my head at some of the puns used by them. Remember 2 & half years ago whenever a story related to a Tiger came up there instantly had to try be a Tiger King pun because of the trending rage of that doco-series at the time. But they all felt really shoehorned in and tacky. Remember there was one about Red Pandas (but can't remember which zoo in this instant) titled ''how much can a panda bare?'' ..still makes me cringe lol

Green sea turtle release:

Taronga Zoo releases turtle into wild in effort to further understand lifespan

Taronga Zoo have released a Green sea turtle that was rescued in 2020.

This release is significant as the 15 year old turtle represents an age class of this species that little is known about - with previous data focussing on hatchlings and breeding age turtles (40 years plus).

The turtle has been fitted with a tracking transmitter to record data for marine biologists.

Taronga Zoo collaborate on New Zealand fur seal release/tracking:

Taronga have collaborated with the following entities as part of the NSW Government’s Seabirds to Seascapes project: James Griffin MP, Department of Planning and Environment, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

From Taronga socials:

'Skip’ the seal, as he is known, was released last week just outside Sydney Heads following three-month’s rehabilitation at @SeaWorldAus.

The juvenile seal was found ashore, south of Fraser Island with cookie-cutter shark bites, lethargic and severely underweight.

So far, the data collected from the tracker has shown Skip travelled more than 100 km within the first 24 hours of being released, and is currently swimming about 130km south of the NSW and Victoria border. That is an impressive 550km from where he was first released!

An update on Skip (New Zealand fur seal):

From socials:

Skip is currently near the northern tip of Flinders Island in the Bass Straight, more than 800km from where he first set off.

The tracker showed Skip likely hitched a ride south via the Australian Eastern Current before stopping in for a feed about 130km past the NSW and Victoria border.

I disagree with the lions - for me it's the pinnipeds that cop the most: Sealed with a Kiss, Seal of Approval etc.

:p

Elephants are the biggest winners when it comes to puns. Within thr next few years, Taronga Zoo’s two elephants will pack their trunks and move into Jumbo sized quarters at the Taronga Western Plains.

Zoo staff are up to the tusk of crate training them and are confident the expanded cow and calf facility will be anything but a white elephant. The elephant in the room is the mammoth costs of the infrastructure; but such concerns are irrelephant compared to the social welfare of the herd, which is ivorything.

I believe the keepers are expected to make a trunk call when they are on the way to dubbo
