taronga zoo training institute

i am managing to work around my timetable to fit it in and plus the first year their is only 12 prac days so that should be good.

i am so looking forward to it. i just wanted to see if anybody had done it or knows more details about assessments and stuff.

Just a question - I noticed they asked what days are more suitable for the prac but couldn't see what days the theory classes are ... am I missing something?? [I was taking a sneaky look when I was meant to be working!]

no i am pretty sure that this is when the classes are even for the first intake of the year.

there is only one time for the classes at least that is what they said in my information pack

Cool - thanks so much! I might have to give them a call or try to work something out at work. Stupid full-time job! grr

emaleth013,

if you do enroll you have to tell me because i will then at least know one person.

i hope your work lets you take one afternoon off every two weeks.

I am currently doing cert 2. Its hard going when you have a job. Cert 2 is the easy one. Cert 3 means two years and a pract day every week at the Zoo. The pract days are part of the course so have to do them. Any questions fire away. Oh and mid year intake is full already.
Enroll for nxt year. But be quick

hey stretchdandy,

its great to finally ask someone my questions.

here it goes:

how many people in your class/course?

what do you have to do for assesments?

what are pracs like? when i did work experience they were great and i got to do alot of stuff but one thing i did notice was apart from one keeper most of the others didn't really want to know me

what deparments are you in for pracs?

what does the course work entail?

is it hard?

um um ...

i think thats all i will probably think of some more later

About Twenty in my class there is two, classes, Wed and Thursday.
Assessments have varied from in class stuff to take home assignments, A bit like school. You also have a skills book which you complete in class and on your pract days
The prac days are spent being a Intern Zookeeper, this gives you the opportunity to experience being a zookeeper.
The keepers im working with are great(OZ mammals) but like any work place you have your good areas and bad. So far ive heard nothing bad from my fellow class mates and the keepers let me fit right in.
The departments you can wotk in are Carnivores,Primates,Unglates, Backyard to bush, Marine mammals, VQC, bird show, Birds, umm i think thats it.
I will be moving to Marine mammals nxt month, 6 pract days in each section.

Course work is broken into sections. 10 i think in all. Things like Safety and Communications to rescue and caring for young animals.
Classes are great, well so far.

Is the course hard. That all depends on the person i think. I dont think so. Cert 3 will be harder i think because of the commitment you have to make.
Its hard working and doing the course but mostly everybody in class is working.

If ya like add me as a friend or buddy. And keep in touch.

I am also doing Cert II in July..

Hey Panthera-leo.

Just thought I'd say helloe as I am also starting the Cert II at Taronga in July.
I'm pretty excited... I'm looking forward to the practical aspect of the course.
I was originally going to do Cert II through Tafe but I didn't make the enrolment date and then I found out about Taronga Zoo.

Hope to hear from you soon

Gday Luna might see you around as im only halfway thru my Cert 2 course.
Theres a few of us on facebook we keep in contact outside of TZ and with the keepers also thru it. Just look up TTI in the groups.

i agree with how carfull you have to be. make sure that your facebook group is set to private becasue you have to follow the zoo's privacy laws as soon as you associate yourself with them

The manager of the TTI is in my facebook group and i know about zoo policies

Hi guys.....Does anyone know which is better... zoo course or tafe course???
Is it worth spending more on the zoo course?
What are the benefits as apposed to tafe? I have placement at a park so thats not a problem with doing the course at tafe.
Is there anyone out there doing the course now or who has done the course that can tell me about it???
How hard is it to get into the zoo course?

Gday.
Im doing cert 2. I recommend doing the TTI course over the tafe one, simply because of the experience you gain from both the class sessions and the Prac day. The instructors(teachers) are keepers who have years of experience behind them and are very helpful, Im not sure what Tafe teachers are like.
Cost wise i think thats up to the individual, i think for the price you pay, you get back more knowledge and experience for the TTI course.
You've got to be quick if you want to do either course as they fill up pretty quick. The mid year intake was filled up a couple months ago.

Another reason im doing the TTI course is the closeness to where i live and work. Which is another thing to consider.

I hope ive answered a few of your questions.

Stretchedandy.
