My wife and I where in Sydney last week. We decided to spend an afternoon at Taronga. The new Asian rainforest/ elephant precinct was open. At the moment the langurs and gibbons are not on display. The aviaries have birds in them but you can't walk through them yet. The otters, tapirs, binturongs and fishing cats are in their new enclosures. The elephant's area looks pretty good and it will give people a great close up view of them in thier pools. Some of the viewing areas are a bit small and there may be a problem with over-crowding in these areas at times. I am looking forward to seeing the elephants arrive and all the other animals go on display. I just hope the enclosure is big enough for 5 elephants.

elephants at Taronga Zoo

Is their enclosure 14 acres ? Even at that size , it is still a small enclosure as far as elephants are concerned (?)

Happy new year to all you ozzies and kiwis, just been watching the new year fireworks display live from Sydney harbour and my first thought is to the animals in the zoo, the noise and the vibration must be horrific for them, i would think most animals are kept inddors in the zoo at night are they? And with the natural bowl of the bay and the acoustics must multiply the effect any news of any of the animals being stressed?

i spent new years at the zoo, most of the animals where locked in their night dens such as all the great apes. other animals were all given acces to night dens and exhibits living on sydney harbour their are all used to fireworks and the elephnts didnt even look up and just kept eating. the girraffes looked a tad flighty and for the most kept together as a herd.

but there were keepers at the zoo enjoying the veiw and partying with friends so if anything had gone wrong the right people were there to fix it

Kiang, do you think the shores of the harbour are normally a quite place? There are frequent 747s flying over, joy flight helicopters, a couple of local sea planes on regular joy flights, and the usual noise of the city. Overall, the fireworks are really not much noisier than that.

I was at the zoo last night, and as torie said, all was quiet, with some animals on display until dark, just as they are during the regular twilight concerts. The crowd was very quiet this year, and there were no problems with any of the animals. A number of animals normally stay out all night, and last night was no different.

Except for one notable exception, female chimp Fifi who died earlier this year was not in the exhibit as she usually is. The fireworks used to stress her, and she would generally refuse to come into the night dens on New Year's Eve.

I couldn't think of a nicer, more peaceful spot to enjoy the fireworks!

In contrast to Fifi, Lulu (by all accounts, i.e. Zoonooz) loves to watch the fireworks and always refuses to come into her night house.
