READERS of the Daily are being asked to put their thinking caps on and come up with a name for an endangered newborn pup at Taronga Zoo.

The pup was born in the zoo to two dholes, called Tunlay and Brahmi, who arrived in February from Cambodia.

The newborn dhole (pronounced doll) needs a name that is relevant to its history.

There will be an element of research in choosing a name but there are some great prizes for the ultimate winner and runners-up.

The major prize, across all 19 Cumberland Newspapers, will be a ``Roar and Snore'' sleepover adventure at the zoo for two adults and a Zoo Parent Sponsorship Package for the dholes.

Plus for each paper there is a family pass (two adults and two children) valid for a year.

To help in the quest for a name, here are a few facts about dholes: Instead of barking they whistle like a bird and cluck like a chicken. Dholes live in South-East Asia and India.

A member of the canidae family, the dholes were described by Rudyard Kipling as ``red dogs'' in his stories about Mowgli.

Carnivore keeper Justine Powell said the zoo's two dholes were introduced upon arrival at the zoo and shortly after Tunlay went into season.

They had one pup 12 weeks ago.

``It would be good to have a name that reflects their origin, maybe a river from South-East Asia or India,'' a zoo representative said.

The youngster weighed 900g at three weeks of age.

The Daily is giving away a Taronga Zoo package, including a Roar and Snore sleepover, for naming the baby dhole.

To be in the running, write on the back of an envelope your suggested name for the dhole pup. Include your name, address, phone number and the name of this paper and send it to: Taronga Zoo competition, PO Box 6062, Parramatta Business Centre, NSW 2150 or visit our website at Mosman Daily and click on the caption under the picture of our cute pup on the home page. Entries close December 15.

The judge's decision is final.

Any personal information you provide will be used for this competition alone. The information will not be provided to any third party and it will be destroyed after the promotion.

i knew it

can anyone remember from my last thread about my taronga visit i suspected that the dhole had bred...turns out i was right. just inside the enclosure gate is the sign used on all enclosures that includes all details of the enclosure inhabitants. its listed 1.2-so i surmised that meant one male, one female and either an additional female or pup. its a pup, and an australian first
