Taronga Zoo Taronga's Elephants and other news!!!

kool thanks, a good read, though i wonder if they will ever put those cams on there site?

ithink they should, the pictures are really interesting and its cool to see what elephants do when they think no one is wathcing

Just thought I would let you guys know that a baby gorilla was born at about 3 oclock yesterday on exhibit!!!! So the public knew before the keepers!!!!! At this stage they thinks it’s a boy but they wont be certain until they get a close look in a few days… hope its not a boy because there isn’t really anywhere to put a male gorilla…. Don’t know anything about its parents sorry!!

And also I got to meet tang mo and tong dee on their morning work this morn it was the coolest thing ever!

That is exciting news, nothing has come through on the mail lists yet, is everything going ok with the babe?

everything was fine this morning, they had the whole exhibit blocked off and the gorialls were all off exhibit. maybe their jsut waiting till they can confirm the gender before putting in out on mailing lists ect

torie, isnt that information generally kept quite for a while, until the health of the baby is confirmed? o well, the public sore it so cats out of the bag there!

congrats on meeting the eles, they really are special arent they!

regardless of it being a male or female this birth is still so special. by the time this little one gets old enough to start causing problems Perth may even be a potential holder.

im going to the zoo on monday, if hes on display i might go and see him< very very Cute!!!!!!

i just put this in a nother thread but people can chose which is most sutible but Zoo stays mum over jumbo pregnancy - National - smh.com.au

anyone think theres any truth in this??? zoopro any word from you?:P
Moi?

My guess is the key is in one sentence in the article "It is understood the zoo was considering whether to begin a program of artificial insemination.". Probably this is based on the fact that Biosecurity Australia have just released the draft policy on importation of elephant semen.

But then what would I know?......

a newspaper article isnt the best starting point is it?
for starters they cant count....according to the pic taronga has four elephants. and the reference to the 1400kg weight gain-------isnt that thong dee? the street elephant who was underweight anyway?

i totally agree that the article is flawed and doesnt really say anything that we didnt already know, the ele puting on weight was in the annual report and we have known for ages that AI was always going to be an option i just found it interesting that the paper would run with this story when it does seem to have so many flaws so either they know something we dont or they just figure elephants sell papers and its been a bit quite on the ele front latly

well now the greens have jumped on the story
Outcry over pregnant underage elephant - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

but i wonder i they really do have 'leaked documents' or anything like that or ar just going on the paper rumors anyway it does kinda annoy me because they said that it was wrong to seperate gung from the girls and now they are saying its wrong that one could get pregnant! well thats what happens if you dont spilt boys and girls!!!

so the elephants who would never breed in an australian zoo............and shouldnt have been seperated from each other (cow and bull)........may be breeding. and now taronga zoo is irresponsible for breeding animals which are impossible to breed and irresponsible because they were doing what the Greens said they should, but werent.
btw, what would the Greens know about elephants anyway? about as much as a zoobeat forum member ;)

no, lee rhinannon needs to learn to shut her trap unless she's going to talk about something she knows about.

i don't bloody vote greens so that can piss on about a bloodly elephant, i vote for them so they will put BIG environment issue on the agenda.

i expect the RSPCA to complain, but the greens should stick keep their noses out of it and stop conforming to the stereotype that all greens are a bunch of animal and tree-hugging vegetarians. it doesn't do the party any favours.

BE PREPARED!

As we all know, young females of all species are often unsuccessful with their first baby/babies.
Now that Thong Dee is confirmed pregnant, I hope it's a success, or the Greens, RSPCA and all the other opponents of the elephant importation will love it and squeal loud and long.

I agree with you, patrick. The Greens could be so much more effective if they concentrated on issues of integrity rather than being a mob of nit-pickers.

As for the RSPCA, they should concentrate on REAL cruelty; there's plenty of that (i.e. factory farming in all its forms).

The rest of the Animal Lib. types are idealists but not realists.

All I can do is shake my head in despair. As a member of the Green Party I want nothing to do with Lee Rhiannon, she has shown herself, time and time again to be an extremeist, ignorant of many issues and only seem to want to get her name in the papers. She certainly gives the Greens a bad name and seems to be associating herself more with PETA type issues than enviromental.

Please, please let all go well with this pregnancy
