Tasmania Zoo Tasmania Zoo news

A few additional pieces of news mentioned in Tasmania Zoo's summary for 2023 on their social media:
  • a giraffe enclosure expansion was completed, providing their bachelor trio with 1.5 more acres.
  • their female Southern Cassowary moved to New South Wales for breeding purposes.
  • Isla, a female Golden Lion Tamarin arrived from Victoria to be paired with their resident male Mokey for breeding purposes.
  • births/hatchings occurred with their Tasmanian Devils, Tasmanian Wombats and Little Penguins.

It's a sad state of affairs when the private zoos with a fraction of the budget our larger public zoos have. Can hold seven cat species while zoos like taronga and western plains hold, at least to my knowledge. Just tiger and lion.

It makes Tasmania zoo worth the visit.

Taronga also has fishing cat, and TWPZ has cheetah, but yes, that is still only three cat species (four between them).

Darling Downs Zoo is one of best runners up to Tasmania’s felid collection with African lion, Sumatran tiger, Sri Lankan leopard, Cheetah, Caracal and Serval.

Will any of our region’s zoo beat Hamilton Zoo in the race to acquire Clouded leopard?

I really hope Tasmania Zoo can get them in the near future but I doubt that they will beat Hamilton Zoo in getting Clouded Leopard

Tasmania Zoo are currently recruiting for a Large Carnivore Keeper, and the ad interestingly states:

“You will be working with Maned Wolf, Cheetah, Caracal, Serval, Lion, Sumatran Tiger, Snow Leopard, Sri Lankan Leopard, African Wild Dog and new exciting species added to the section in the coming months.”

Any guesses as to what other large carnivores Tasmania Zoo could possibly add to their collection? Or is it just a little throw away line in a job ad? Surely with the variety of carnivores, especially Felids, they don’t need to pretend to be bringing in anything else to their collection
