Tasmania Zoo Tasmania Zoo news

Thanks for this review. It was really interesting to read through!

A few comments:

It was reported an Australian zoo will be receiving a Sri Lankan leopard in the next year, which I assumed at the time would be Tasmania Zoo. The inclusion of a second exhibit implies an intention to breed as a simple den would otherwise be sufficient for locking the leopard away while exhibit cleaning takes place (as is the case for the other big cats).

Tying in with the information you provided, it seems likely Tasmania Zoo will receive a non-breeding tiger/s (possibly a sibling pair or retired breeding pair) once Cinta passes on.

I agree it would be good to see more cold adapted species held at Tasmania Zoo. I’ve often thought Siberian tigers would have been well suited to the climate; though they were phased out regionally in part because Sumatran tigers were deemed a better fit for the Australasian climate overall, which is certainly true.

That’s exciting news about the Spotted hyena. Tasmania Zoo will be the eighth regional holder.
Regarding the Spotted Hyena, presumably this is the destination of one of Darling Down's three Spotted Hyena who were recently acquired over from Africa. The construction and completion of this exhibit would tie in nicely with their recent arrival.

Four Hamadryas Baboons arrived two weeks ago - a new species for Tasmania Zoo. They arrived from Darling Downs Zoo and the troop includes a 27-year-old male. They hope to still breed from this older group with their youngest female: Tasmania Zoo welcomes four new cheeky additions just in time for Christmas

Edit: They are male Rameses and females Cagney (from Poland), Lacey (from Poland) and Cleo (from Alma Park Zoo). The original breeding troop at Darling Downs Zoo.

I visited Tasmania Zoo yesterday and will give a few short updates.

  • The Zoo will soon receive an Australian born female Hyena they haven't worked out which female or which facility but the candidates would likely be be Zawati (b.2023 at Sydney Zoo) or Utundu (b.2024 at Monarto Safari Park) they also mentioned that Sadeeki is Jamila's brother though I wasn't so sure if they were twins or not.
  • The plan Is still to get a female Sri Lankan Leopard hence the enclosure set up however they are unsure if it will be (F) Kalani at National Zoo or an inport from overseas.
  • There is still hope to breed snow leopards with mention being that Sikari will be the next breeding male implying that his father will either be retired or stopped from breeding until Sikari does. however as mentioned there is a lack of interest in snow leopards regionally (as the three phase outs in the last 10 years have shown).
  • No official date on when the De Brazzas Monkeys will head to Darling Downs Zoo but they mentioned they'd like to import their own pair once the current pair have left.
  • The Hamadryas Baboon troop are in the former Mandrill enclosure opposite the Siamang.
  • The former Celebes crested macaque enclosure is undergoing renovations no knowing what will go there yet but the fact they're renovating it could mean something that's not a primate (perhaps clouded leopard and just my luck to miss if that's the case)

Thank you @Patrick Keegan for this fantastic update. Really comprehensive and a great read. :)

It does indeed sound like Sikari’s parents would be retired from breeding as I can’t forsee the region being able to accomodate cubs from two litters.

One possibility is Tasmania Zoo could receive a female from overseas with the offspring then returning to Europe (dependent on Sikani’s genetic value within Europe). Tasmania Zoo alternatively might be able to retain the offspring, with the family living in pairs (gender dependent); though presumably there’d be a long term breeding plan here for any offspring bred.

Tasmania Zoo now has Black and white ruffed lemur:

From Altina’s socials:

Altina sadly waves goodbye to 3 beautiful Black & White Ruffed Lemurs as they head to their news homes across the Pond!

Kintana, Ruffas Ragamuffin & Masoandro boarded a flight early yesterday morning to get to their news homes in Tasmania.

I visited Tasmania Zoo today and while I don’t have much to add to @Patrick Keegan ’s update from earlier in the year, I do have:
- The zoo now has two new dingo pups
- The pair of Debrazzer monkeys are still onsite
- Still only one spotted hyena onsite, same with Sri Lankan leopard

It surprises me a female Spotted hyena hasn’t been transferred in yet. Since their hierarchy is so complex, I assume they’re waiting for an inevitable conflict to arise in either the Sydney pack or the Monarto pack before identifying Zawati or Utundu as a candidate for transfer.

A female Siamang named Schtroumpfette has been imported from France. She will be paired with lone male Ollie who has spent many years alone as a suitable female was not identified within the region. Brilliant development for both his welfare and the greater program - reported on their FB page.

Bizarre name. I see from a quick search it appears to be some sort of female Smurf.

On the plus side, I’m absolutely thrilled to have a new founder in the region. Along with Suka from Pairi Daiza, new additions to the region’s Siamang population are valuable indeed.

I confirm.
The Smurfs (Schtroumpfs) are very popular child comic characters in France (and Belgium).
