Hey Could i have some info on the history of the Devils at the Zoo and were they were kept.

Also when are they planned to return

thanks :D:cool:

I can check when I get home to see the last images I have before the last one died. I have images of the male and female from 2002 and 2003 on my website

They were in the end exhibit on the little spur trail between the Bactrian Camels and the rock wallabies.

I remember hearing about a year or so ago about a couple of zoos in the U.S. trying to get them, but I understand that they are not being exported at the present time.

I've seen a tasmanian Devil at San Diego Zoo in 2002, in the little exhibit on the right side of the tree kangaroos exhibits, with the window at the front. I think, it was the last one.

wow, I can't believe that is where they kept their devils! That is exhibit is small, and it now holds the Royal Antelope.

I can't believe they keep Royal Antelope there--when are they going to get rid of that whole row of tiny cages?

That area is just weird, didn't it use to be part of the camel ride or something?

Don't expect to see any Taz devils at the San Diego Zoo anytime soon. In case you haven't heard, this species is being threatened by a rampant plague of facial cancer, which is spreading through the remaining devils and wiping them out. Australian zoo officials are desperately trying to control this, hoping to prevent it from completely ending the species and sending them into extinction. A few years ago, the Rio Grande Zoo (in Albuquerque) received permission to become an outpost for a group of Taz devils, and they got a nice exhibit all set up for them. But apparently the Aussie government is having second thoughts on this, as there are still no devils in Albuquerque. I don't know what the hold-up is.

Devils were also the planned showpiece of several species to be exhibited, after the future renovation of the Los Angeles Zoo's former Koala House.

According to the San Diego Zoo history page, Tasmanian Devils first arrived at the San Diego Zoo in 1956.

According to the Ft. Wayne Indiana Zoo history page, their male became the last Tasmanian Devil living outside of Australia in 2003 when the remaining US Zoo devils died of old age. I remember the San Diego male died before the female, so the male may have died in 2002 or early 2003 and the female in 2003.

...untill 2.2 were received as a gift from Tasmania to the people of Denmark to celebrate the marriage (engagement?) of their crown prince with a girl from Tasmania. They are now on show in Copenhagen Zoo and remain the only animals outside of Australia/Tasmania...

But unfortunately, this pairs never bred and they are now to old to breed. They do have a good exhibit, but it is right next to a childrens playground, so it was to noisy for a scuccesful breeding.

Did Cincinnati ever have Devils? For some reason I remember an enclosure as a kid that had a warning sign with a picture of a hand and Tasmanian devil stating not to put your had in the enclosure. Can anyone confirm this?

They did have Tasmanian devils for a time--I believe they were in the children's zoo. It was a roundish exhibit with viewing from above.

I know for sure that the LA Zoo had Tasmanian devils in 1990. Back then, when I took my kids to the zoo, my daughter was only 4 at the time. She had just had a Sunday School lesson on Satan (THE Devil). When I told her we were going to see some Tasmanian devils, she started screaming and crying, saying, "I don't wanna see The Devil!" It was quite funny and it's still a family story we repeat.
