Terra Natura Benidorm Terra Natura, Benidorm

Any news on the Indian rhinos and whether the Nico's mating one of the cows has been successful?

AFAIK, Nisha is not pretty fond of Nico. Nico still has some "problems" when trying to mate. Well, you can watch Nico mounting Shiwa pretty often but it might not work as it should ...

I don't believe that benidorm has any cows who can breed. non of them has offsprings (living) and they are all quite old. The Benidorm herd is going to die a slow death (it's a dutch figure of speach, is it also being used in english?)
Maybe benidorm will be holding young bulls in the future just like Sevilla is doing now.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe Luka may be what they call a carrier of the elephant endotheliotropic herpes virus. Having read Elephant Encyc (and I'm sure more knowledgeable folks can correct me on this) several of his offspring appear to have died because of it.

I believe most of the failed births of calves sired by Luka at Port Lympne were from causes other than the Herpes virus (stillbirths, mother killed calf etc) -though certainly the 2 year old male 'Sittang' did die from it. Whether Luka or Sittang's mother was the carrier in that case, I do not know.

Luka is certainly a dangerous male and killed two keepers in Belgrade Zoo.

Recent news from the park

Bird arrivals include a cassowary, a greater curassow, a male helmeted curassow, and Edwards pheasant from zoo Lourusa in Portugal.
A Lyle's fruit bat was born to bring the group up to 11 members.
A siamang has also been born.

This may seem a bit off-topic, but does anyone know anything about the female Asiatic Lion at Benidorm? I know the male is Bala, but who replaced Kalinga when she departed?

One more bit of research on this zoo (Terra Natura Benidorm): Does anyone know what year this zoo was first opened? Thanks!

According to ZTL, the last Bontebok in Europe - which had been held here - has now passed away.

A shame if true; it had only arrived recently from Tabernas.

It was indeed at Murcia - I had been under the impression they were both the same site :)

I will be visiting the collection in August (also doing Mundo Mar in the same week) and have been informed that the collection now only hold melanistic jaguars.

In my four visits in 7 years I only seen melanistic jaguars, never "spotted" ones.

A female Siamiese Crocodile has arrived from the Crocodile Zoo in Denmark
