1100 is a lot of baboons to keep for research purposes!

I can see how numbers would get that high since they'd likely need several in each testing group for each medical test. Alongside that they'd need control groups and it sounds like they are also breeding so they've likely got a separate set of breeding baboons to keep their own stocks up without having to externally source (save for new genetic material to maintain healthy bloodlines).

Edit: Yep, they just did. Baboons Escape Lab Infamous for Neglecting and Killing Primates.
While I don't really support animal testing, I will admit that the advances from it are pretty big.
