Zoo København The Artic Ring

No, I don't think so. If some species of pinniped was to be imported from Greenland they would have to be wild-caught. And there is not nearly enough space to exhibit walrus as well as polar bear.

Toddy,

Any information on current building costs and a window on exhibit designs for the Arctic Ring?

Might some of this cash be given over to other projects?

What is the timeline from now on?

Unfortunately, I do not have access to the budget details, but it is unlikely that the zoo will have any money to spare. Like previously mentioned we are talking lots of mock rock and a glass tunnel. Look below for a picture of a model of the exhibit. It is a bit outdated though.

There is no specific timeline except for the completion date (early 2012).

This is fantastic news and I can´t wait for 2012! I hope the project won´t get delayed like the elephant exhibit was. What an absolutely wonderful donation - almost 30 million dollars from one single donor!

The project is presented on the zoo´s web page:

Pressemeddelelse

But the text is in Danish which most forumsters will not be able to read. An interesting detail is that the pool will be six meter deep. There are half a dozen illustrations but unfortunately I can´t open them up.

Danish architectural firm Dall & Lindhardtsen have designed the exhibit, which is good news since they have done most of the newer exhibits at the zoo and all of them have turned out nice. If you want to check out the company´s earlier projects for Copenhagen Zoo:

Click in the third text column to get a picture of the different projects. Then, if you read Danish, click on "fakta" under the picture and a description of the project will appear.

The Danish daily paper Berlingske Tidene shows 15 illustrations (including the 6 on the zoo´s web page as mentioned above). OK, 2 of them are just photos from the existing enclodure.

Also includes a couple of simple architectural drawings.

Great one. It's great that another zoo plans to build an new exhibit for polar bears (in Germany Munich and Hamburg).
The pictures in "pressemeddelelse" (I like this word) are interesting, looks a little bit like the polar bear exhibits of Karlsruhe and Gelsenkirchen, the sea lion exhibit of Gelsenkirchen and the Grizzly exhibit at Bronx Zoo.
I'm looking forward to the bird rock sounds a bit like the plan of Hamburg (same species).
It will be a neck-and-neck race between Copenhagen and Hamburg.
Copenhagen's advantage: they have money
Hamburg's advantage: the species (other than that mentioned they plan, 4 penguin species, 2 pinnipeds (walrus, fur seal)

@Toddy, you've said, that females can be seperated. Do they have an own enclosure or do they sit behind scenes or will the zoo hold females+cups and males on shift?

It seems that the zoo is going to keep the old exhibit (for now). It will be separated from the new exhibit by a passageway. It is the plan that the polar bears will have access to it one day and the the brown bears the next day. That way the bears can enjoy the smell of each other. I asume that this exhibit will also be able to function as a nursery.

Hmmmmm........

This is interesting and at the same time a little bit disappointing, as far as the brown bears are concerned (although you did use the expression "for now").

This would mean that all three of the old bear grottoes, two of them now occupied by the polar bears, would every second day be opened up to the brown bears (either the female with cubs or the male).

That is somewhat better than the present situation, but I sincerely hope that the zoo will eventually come up with a much better solution for the brown bears.

Interesting detail

An interesting detail about the new polar bear exhibit has been revealed. It is planned that the connection between the new and polar bear exhibits will be used to sometimes allow the brown bears and polar bears to switch enclosures for short periods of time. This will provide both species with new experiences and scents.

It is still planned that the old Bear Grottos will be completely rebuild into a Bear Mountain and only house brown bears. This project will not begin until some time after the Arctic Ring is finished.

I will keep you posted with more details about the project when I get them.

Time for an update

Just thought that is was time for an update on the new "Arctic Ring" in Copenhagen Zoo. Construction has been ongoing since the summer of 2010 and the building site is now basically a large hole in the ground.

You may disregard the previous pictures I have shown you of the exhibit. I have posted pictures of the official plan and model of the Arctic Ring below:

The area of the Arctic Ring will be around 3000 sq. meters. Besides polar bears the area will also include a small seal exhibit (most likely for common seals) and a North Atlantic bird exhibit including puffins and guillemots.

The Arctic Ring is set to open in June 2012.

I can't wait to see this - remarkable that in a country as small as Denmark there will be three very fine Polar Bear exhibits by 2012.

Koebenhavn is also turning in a zoo well worth visiting both for its animal collection and innovative exhibits of late ... :D

Let us not forget that they managed to get a breeding pair of Tasmanian Devils just because of their prince's bride selection! :D

Were there any people left in Europe with experience of Tassie Devil keeping? (the last devil died I think in either Rotterdam or Budapest but not sure where, I have a photo of the Rotterdam one from 1992 but somewhere I read that there was an animal left in Budapest as late as 1996)

I thought they had received 4 rather young animals?

You can read the whole story of the tasmanian devils in Copenhagen Zoo in this thread :)

copenhagen zoo artic ring will be ready by summer 2012 and if you believe there will be three polar bears
which is now two right now with one female and one male to the female probably so they can become bear cubs in the future
I can not wait until 2012 to the Copenhagen Zoo

The Arctic Ring opened two days ago in Copenhagen Zoo. The Zoo has created a special website dedicated to the project where you can read details as well as see pictures and videos.

There has been international coverage including this:

and this which I posted a while ago in another thread

This article is a bit rubbish but includes a few pictures and shows the reach of a good publicity campaign.

Polar bears make a splash at Copenhagen Zoo - Birmingham Mail

Quote:
Visitors to Copenhagen Zoo will be able to get an underwater view of the attraction’s polar bears, with the opening of its new Arctic Circle attraction.

The Denmark zoo has created more space for its polar bears to swim and roam, extending its existing enclosure to create a 3,000 m2 area.

The Arctic Circle, which opens to the public in early February, will allow visitors to see the polar bears in the dry, outside enclosure or venture down into the glass tunnel to watch the beautiful creatures swimming and playing underwater.
