The Best German Zoos

HI all. Bumping up this very old thread... as I'd like to hear what people's latest rankings of the top 10 (or 20) zoos in Germany are. I'm aware of the top 50/100 in Europe threads -- but I'm wondering which zoos in Germany have improved in recent years vs declined.

I'm particularly interested in how people rank the zoos in the Ruhr Valley area as I'll have a couple days there soon. Thanks!

15 years is a long time....

Personally my favourite 3 German zoos are Cologne, Nuremberg and the Wilhelma in Stuttgart. Behind that is gets crowded with zoos like Rostock, Goerlitz, Leipzig, Munich, the Berlins, Frankfurt, Rheine and Dresden. I don't do rankings really so after my personal top-3 it is all fluid and can change with the day.

The Ruhr area in general seems an area that is slowly getting behind other German regions when it comes to zoos. For me Cologne is head and shoulders above the rest, but behind it there are a lot of zoos that have things going for them, but that also have plenty of stuff to fix. Most are owned by relatively poor cities, so investment levels stay behind compared to the richer south and the zoo-crazy (and EU funded) east. Probably Duisburg, ZOOM and Dortmund would be my picks behind Cologne. Wuppertal used to be a must-visit zoo but lack of investment and the disappearance of many many rarities mean that there has been quite the decline there. Duisburg is relatively stagnant too, but both Dortmund and Munster have seen some good investment in the zoo recently (at least in monetary terms, can't speak for the results).

For Germany as a whole I would say that apart from Wuppertal zoos like Frankfurt, Erfurt, Hagenbeck and Karlsruhe are struggling these days and they are getting behind their competitors. Especially in Frankfurt there is still a lot of good stuff around, but also an increasing part of the park that needs renovations, which tend to happen at a glacial pace. Leipzig is also not the promised land it once was. Gondwana is impressive but enclosure quality is very much a mixed bag and since then only the new rhino enclosures really delivered, with many of the new constructions being forgettable or small for their inhabitants by modern standards. New insights in husbandry mean that many of the earliest projects of Zoo Leipzig this century (most notably the ape house) are already outdated or too small (lions & elephants).

For rising stars look to the east I would say. Cottbus is showing what can be managed on a small budget with impressive budget enclosures for elephants, tapirs and the current renovation of the carnivore house looks very promising too. Tierpark Goerlitz is another one that is developing into a small but choice collection based primarily around Eurasian species. In the shadows of Leipzig Zoo Dresden is also developing very nicely and I am much looking forward to their upcoming orangutan exhibit. Zoo Magdeburg had a boom period from roughly 2008-2020, but with new management that seems to have stagnated and when it comes to species diversity it has already gone down sharply. Still much superior to what is was 15 years ago. Up north Zoo Rostock and Zoo Schwerin are quietly booming too, especially Rostock has some star exhibits these days with the new polar bear complex (including aquarium) and the Darwineum.

In the rest of Germany, Nuremberg has made the change from a small version of Tierpark Berlin into a place where they experiment with interesting species mixes, spacious naturalistic habitats and an increasing focus on smaller species. Nordhorn is probably the best children's zoo of them all, a fantastic domestic species area but the surrounding enclosures are also mostly very good, seals and leopards excepted. The Opel-Zoo in Kronberg near Frankfurt is also increasingly a competitor for Frankfurt with their new elephant habitat and plans for a new Asian zone with rhinos. They have gotten rid of their most outdated exhibits and are now slowly but steadily expanding and becoming the big-animal zoo of the region if Frankfurt isn't careful... Finally Osnabrueck has also gone through extensive modernizations, but most of it isn't really to my taste and somewhat tacky. Most of it is pretty solid though...

My list of my favourite German zoos has charged very little since I posted it in the thread below:

https://www.zoochat.com/community/threads/top-5-german-zoos.466508/

Consequently, I am reposting it again here with just a few minor modifications.

I had no difficulty whatsoever in choosing the first three; they just had to be

1. Berlin Zoo
2. Berlin Tierpark
3. Stuttgart (Wilhelma)

And I should add that the first two are not only my favourite German zoos but my two favourite zoos in the world.

Choosing the next seven was much more difficult, and ranking them harder still, but I eventually arrived at the following list without ranking them.

  • Cologne
  • Frankfurt
  • Hamburg (Hagenbecks)
  • Leipzig
  • Munich (Hellabrunn)
  • Nuremberg
  • Wuppertal
These are all zoos that I have visited many times over the years and have always thoroughly enjoyed my visits.

There were various other German zoos I would like to have included; it was hard, for example, to leave Duisburg off the list. I also decided to consider general collections only and ignore bird gardens otherwise Walsrode would have definitely featured in the list.

Finally, I must emphasise that this a subjective list of my personal favourites; I am not suggesting that these are objectively the best German zoos.

Thank you very much @lintworm for that detailed update -- I get to Europe about every other year, and usually visit a couple zoos (last year, Dresden + Wroclaw across the border). Indeed you've confirmed what I was thinking, there seemed to be a boom period a decade ago with investment stalling more recently. Surely, covid hasn't helped. I keep a map with targets across Europe, and have added a few based on your note for next time I am east/north.

This trip, I find myself with two days to spare based in Dusseldorf -- and while I am very tempted to return to Cologne, I'm keen to explore somewhere new and within about an hour.

And thank you @Tim May as I think I'll put Wuppertal squarely on the list (also have to ride the Schwebebahn). Will probably make a call between Duisburg and Dortmund for the other.

Much appreciated... I've only visited 9 in Germany, and over a long period... but I suppose I'd rank them like this:

1) Tierpark Berlin
2) Berlin
3) Nuremberg
4) Stuttgart
5) Leipzig
6) Cologne
7) Frankfurt
8) Dresden
9) Munich

Rating is nearly impossible to do. Everyone has his or her own views and likings. Personally I like underrated zoos that surprise me positively when I get there. However the view is totally different when you visit a zoo once or when you visiting often.

For your Ruhr-Rhine-area visit lintworm already gave good background. My recommendation list for a one time traveller would be this:

1) Gelsenkirchen: still pretty new and very modern. The downside is that because it's new there are barely any changes, which makes it tough to visit more often, but coming to this area once it is a good zoo.

2) Cologne: there are still many old and not nice parts, and you can discuss if it's smart for a size limited zoo to build such a big elephant enclosure, but the zoo is located in the middle of the city and very easy to reach.

3) Krefeld: not sure how good it is to reach but it is a very nice and neat smaller zoo. Certainly not for a full day.

4) Duisburg: get used to the noise of the Autobahn that leads between the two parts of the zoo. There are old parts that require makeover but many parts are very nice, plus you will see species that you don't get to see everywhere. It probably has the best Australia area I know.

5) Wuppertal: those who know Wuppertal struggle with their massive decline over the last years, mainly in terms of losing many species. Still it probably is the zoo in the most beautiful surrounding of the area (be prepared that it's not a flat terrain) and worth a visit

I would opt for Duisburg currently, Dortmund Zoo is full of small and big renovations currently, so is not looking the best at the moment.

Many people combine Duisburg with Krefeld on 1 day and that should be doable with public transport too. Krefeld has the last mountain anoa outside of Indonesia and he might not last much longer, so would be a last chance to see. Krefeld is a neat smaller zoo in general with some good and interesting enclosures, such as the bird house, but also some old legacies that are slowly replaced.

I can't help it, but I like Heidelberg tremendously: a very charming garden (in summer), with enough rarities for the experts here.

Karlsruhe has a great but underrated tropical house.

Munich, nothing stands out here, but the natural atmosphere of those alluvial forests and meadows is unbeatable. Just a perfect summer heat shelter.

Nuremberg is Munich but on a slope with hillside forests and many natural enclosures. Wear good shoes here.

Both Berlins, Stuttgart and Köln are superb in terms of species. The wilhelma is also very overwhelming with traditional Moorish structures, hidden gardens and beautiful views.

Frankfurt is indeed old, but the Grzimeckhaus is a must see while Ukumariland and Borgoriwald have their place.

Wuppertal is a wonderfull garden with one of Europe's most impressive lion enclosures, lots of cats and still an interesting birdhouse.

Rostock, Leipzig, Dresden, Cottbus, Magdeburg all making the east a great zoo destination.

Osnabrück and Munster, just above the Ruhr area, both have their own atmosphere.

Walsrode is unforgetable as a bird lover.

Ruhr area: 1. Köln 2. Wuppertal 3. Duisburg 4. Krefeld 5. Dortmund

Definitely my top three too, albeit with the two Berlin collections switched around - Wilhelma has bounced around a little bit over the last few years depending on my mood when asked, how long had elapsed since my first and (until recently) only visit in 2015, and any recent visits to other collections which may have caught my eye, with the general result that my German zoo rankings have tended to be a fixed top two with a fluid dozen or so behind them.

However, having finally revisited Wilhelma a few weeks ago it surged back into a strong third place - many of the worse zoological exhibits and houses still present in 2015 have been replaced or soon will be, whilst the number of good or even excellent exhibits/houses has increased, the botanical gardens and houses seem to be even more attractive than they already were in 2015, and the grounds generally seemed to be in a better condition overall. I think it is still not the third best zoo in Germany - though it is probably close to it - but I suspect it will now take quite some dislodging from being my third favourite.

4) Duisburg: get used to the noise of the Autobahn that leads between the two parts of the zoo. There are old parts that require makeover but many parts are very nice, plus you will see species that you don't get to see everywhere. It probably has the best Australia area I know.

I reckon that Wilhelma easily beats it hands-down now in this regard - the new Australian house is very good indeed.

A pretty solid starting point for a cross-section of what German zoological collections have to offer, I reckon :) although distinctly not in the running for one of the best German zoological collections around, I think the only major gap on that list is Hamburg - which is a must-visit purely for the historical context it provides.

Ironically, a lot of international zoo chatters visited far more German zoos than myself. Nevertheless, I will give my (clearly biased) list from recent years (some zoos like Frankfurt I haven't been to for quite some time):

1. Berlin Tierpark
2. Berlin Zoo
3. Munich
--------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Cologne
5. Serengeti Park Hodenhagen
6. Eberswalde

To be completely honest, I didn't even really like the lower half of them too much (each one was a nice visit, but unlike with the Berlin zoos and Munich I didn't quite feel that special magic zoo experience and some things bothered me). That is why I highlighted the gap between 3 and 4. Having said so, while I haven't been to the zoos in Nuremberg or Stuttgart yet, but I'm quite confident, I would really like both of them a lot and they would easily make it into my top 5 and above the gap. Unfortunately, I hardly ever travel so far south.
Some other zoos I'd still like to visit and which are a lot closer to me are Hamburg and Leipzig, although I don't really like everything about them from the distance. The rest didn't quite strike my interest so far and I probably wouldn't get too far out of my way for them.

Generally speaking, I am probably quite spoiled with the beautiful Berlin parks and their collections nearby and for as long as I can think back I am completely in love with Berlin Tierpark anyways. So any other zoo has a tough time to actually make it into my heart...

I’ve only visited 3 but all of those 3 have comfortably lodged themselves into any of my top 10 rankings.
1. Tierpark Berlin
2. Berlin Zoo
3. Cologne Zoo

Great feedback, thanks to everyone - exactly what I needed.

@TeaLovingDave - I was actually supposed to fly out of Hamburg, but that'll likely be next time, will pair with Walsrode, for sure.

@Philipine eagle - thanks, Heidelberg added to the future list.

I think I'll shoot for Wuppertal one day, and then Duisburg the other and @lintworm, I'll shoot over to Krefeld if I have time that afternoon.

Thanks again!

I combined Krefeld en Duisburg using public transportation last year. Doable, but mostly because I visited both before and because I could take advantage of the summer season opening times.
