On January 19, 2025, Gan Gan, a clouded leopard, died in the Chongqing Zoo. This is the last clouded leopard in the Mainland China Zoo.

In the past, clouded leopards were not uncommon in Chinese zoos. When I was a child, I saw them in Beijing and Shanghai. However, in this century, most clouded leopards in zoos have died due to aging and diseases, and cannot reproduce. In the past eight years, Chongqing Zoo was the last zoo in Chinese Mainland to raise clouded leopards. The last pair of clouded leopards here are both females from Sichuan. The older sister's name is "Qiu Qiu" and she passed away around 2023. According to unknown sources, the cause of death may have been an anesthesia accident.

Qiu Qiu

After her sister passed away, 'Gan Gan' spent a year alone at Chongqing Zoo. Due to old age, its physical condition is deteriorating, with severe hair loss and long-term bleeding from the wound on its tail that cannot heal. Due to poor conditions, Chongqing Zoo recently cancelled its exhibition and transferred it to a reserved space. Despite hiring a veterinarian to take care, 'Gan Gan' passed away due to old age, at around 17 years old. The autopsy showed symptoms of pancreatic necrosis and cardiopulmonary failure, which we had anticipated but were still regrettable.

Rest in peace, Gan Gan

I wish the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens would take it upon itself to look more after the lesser carnivores inside the country (clouded leopard, the resident leopard spp., dhole and a few other species).
