Colchester's long awaited new male reticulated giraffe will be arriving from Nuremburg Zoo in Germany on 2nd June 2010. On the same day Koife and Century two of Colchester's existing Giraffe herd, will be moved Cotswold's Wildlife Park. Colchester currently keeps 0:2 pure retics, 1:0 Hybrid and 1:0pure rothschild. Hopefully these three will be the start of a new breeding herd. :)

it shouldn't be that way this is the way i would've done it:

1. keep century and bring in an unrelated female rothschild (a young female from longleat)
2. give lily and isha a contriseptive
3. send kofie of to cotswold wildlife gardens
4. once century and the female had bred i would have built an extention outo the 'kingdom of the wild' enclousure

Slight problem. Molly and Margaret (ex Chester) have been confirmed as hybrids. Hence why they are in an all female group at London. ;) There are plenty of Pure rothschild females around if Colchester had been willing to wait a bit but to be honest Reticulated's make a nice change from the more commonly kept Rothschild. Colchester are only one of three british zoo's to currently keep them. The others being Whipsnade and Port Lyme (Whipsnade sent them a pure male to add to there Batchelor herd last year)

Well it's a good job it's not your decision then.

i could sort out all of that zoos problems :)e.g. some of that apaulling fake rock in the amur leopard enclousure.

you don't even know how i would set it out or what the design would look like, so, paulkarli08, think before you comment on other people's ideas:p.

as for the rest of you molly and margret are pure bred i emailed london last week and they said they are pure bred:), plus chester zoo only have pure bred rothschild giraffe.

I don't know who told you that Molly and Margaret were pure but who ever did is telling you whoppers! There mothers Kelly and Faye respectivly, both came from Belfast Zoo where they were born. They were both thought to be pure rothschild and were therefore allowed to breed. However it was later found that some of Belfast herd were hybrids. This meant that Kelly and Faye and there offspring were declared hybrid. Hence Molly and Margaret were sent to London Zoo last year. Faye died a year ago but Kelly was pregnant at the time this problem was discovered Bella was born last year but she will be the last hybrid birth at Chester. Chester have now got 1:2 pure rothschild and will be moving Kelly and Bella elsewhere at somepoint in the future and obtaining at least one more pure female.

On another note Colchester only built there current African area eight years ago so replacing it would be a complete waste of money! and let's even mention the fake rock tonight...

BTW just how could you sort out all Colchester Zoo's problems at the meager age of twelve?!

Don't you tell me that I should 'think before I comment on other's idea's'. Your apparent smirking smile does nothing but show your immaturity. Also, your ideas for zoo's are amateur and extremely unrealistic. You seem to show a lack of concern for conservation issues within zoo's and place your ideas based on 'personal choices and favouritism with certain animals' instead of the wider picture, for example:

1) Why would Colchester Zoo import 2 female giraffes, to then export them again
2) Why would Colchester Zoo attempt to move a white tiger on..... AND bring an apparent new breeding pair of Bengals in? what self respecting zoo would want to take on that?
3) Also, being able to tell Igor and the female Amur tiger apart... its not exactly rocket science is it.... one has testicles, the other doesn't.

I think it is maybe you who should think before you comment, not me!

Sorry you are wrong on this,as Chester moved them out because they are not pure breed Baringo`s,as recommended by the studbook holder for Giraffes, which just happens to be Chester. Also at the moment Chester CURRENTLY do have 2 hybrid female Giraffes still at the zoo so therefore not all the Giraffes are pure Baringo`s at the zoo.

After everything has been said and done, it is good to conclude that another reticulated giraffe holder cum breeding facility will be sited in the UK. Ideally, a third would be welcome in order to make arrangement for transfers more easily. I do hope some of the Whipsnade borne bulls can be exchanged for another unrelated bull in the BIAZA region.

Nice bit of editing pity you cannot edit other peoples posts as well!!

The mixed african paddock is going to be extended soon I'm baffled as to why they've fenced off that area for so long. Whilst talking to the elephant keeper he said that they'd be a lot bigger than they presently are and that they'd be finished soon but this was in october. But this doesn't appear to be so???

Does anyone know more?

do you want me to do it?
i do well in technology
it'll take me 2 days (a lot quicker than colchester zoo r doing it)

oh yeah and NO critism today, i mean it!!!

by the way i'm currently hand rearing (and still going to school) a female newt (6 mths old) called mamba, which meaning crocodile in swahili and a female frog (6 mths old) called duma, which means cheetah in swahili, i gave her this name because she is very fast and agile and so far they are doing fine:)

I just think that they have been delayed over winter with all that nasty weather. The plans were to improve the drainage down that end and extend it to the planted mound (If you know what I mean) and thats it.

Well if you do CHANGE other peoples POSTS I`m sure the MODERATERS will have something to say about that.

Having just read your last post and made no sense of the bottom bit at all I can say is goodbye I will not be reading anything else you have to say in the foreseeable future,as it just doesn`t make any sense.

Nobody can or should attempt to interfere with other members posts.

CAN WE GET THIS THREAD BACK ON TRACK!

Um, isn't Cheetahgirl like twelve or something?

If so, then maybe people shouldn't be squabbling, WITH CHILDREN, over whether or not some giraffes are pure-bred....we should be supporting them not slamming them for their grammar....

Unless I've totally got the wrong end of the stick and you're all actually about twelve......in which case I'll leave you kids to have yr fun! No name-calling though!

Would Century's move to the Cotswolds be long term or short term as I would presume pure Baringos would be in demand?

He's not at this time. His mother (Jolly died at Longleat in 2008) had ten calves during her lifetime! He's number ten and with his siblings throughout Europe he isn't required currently. However should be at a later date I'm sure Cotswold's will move him elsewhere.
