The Elephants in Sweden

The first years I visit the park, I think he went in the enclouse, and I see him, though not on Savanna. But now have Boras built large enclouse behind the elephant house.

And please Dan Koehl , comment aboute Kolmarden Zoo elephants! When the bull come?

Thanks for some very interesting information on the Swedish elephants, Rillekolmård. I haven´t been to Borås for the last 30 years but I have looked a lot at satellite photos and I always kind of suspected that the two back enclosures (south of the savanna) are not available to the visitors?

So it is in those two enclosures that Kibo lives?

Still, they look large to me, and put together they probably meet the demand in Swedish law that says that a single elephant must have an outdoor enclosure of (at least) 4000 square meters? (About one acre.)
 
You have the right Dan! At least one of them is available for Kibo. One of these two can be seen, when the rhino are sometimes there. But for the most part, it is off down to the exbith also. This enclouses are new, build in the 1997 - 2000?
 
Yes , they are bigger than the females out door enclouse , but they also go out on the savanna. Some times are they in one of the big exbiths , (there kibo is) , but they are just in the enclouses when they have a very small babys.
 
awesome, I like it how it is kinda set up like a household ( play area etc.),, cept daddy ain't around much. ;)
 
But you say that the rhinos also are (sometimes) kept in one of these two enclosures?! How come? I would have thought that their "own" outdoor paddocks + the 7000 m2 enclosure that they share with cheetahs would be "enough"?
 
The users of enclouses around the elephant house:

Elephant bull, Kibo: This elephant throws sticks and stones, and have big back enclouses just for him. Some years ago , he also live at the cow enclouse , but now he never do that.

Elephant cows: The elephant cows live at the enclouse in front of the elephant house , an visitor can see it.

Rhinos: The rhinos live whole summer in the mixed exbith , Cheetahs / Rhinos. Some years ago , they also was much at the public back enclouse.

Giraffes: The giraffes have a ceiling on the back, which uses them in winter. Then those on the front, over the visitor walk road , entrance, and into the elephant enclouse, then come out on the savanna.


*Elephant enclouse: You always see this exbith. Its the elephant cows area.

*Back enclouses: Its two enclouses on the back side of the elephant house. Its the bull Kibos home area. Some times lives also Rhinos and elephant cows here. When it is rhinos ore elephants in the exbith , the open the road down to one of the exbiths.

*Savanna: On the Savanna lives Elephants , Zebras , Giraffes , Ostrish , Peafowl, Buffalos, Bocks , Antilopes and more.

*Cheetah Savanna: Here lives Cheetahs and Rhinos at the summer.

Before a new bull can be imported to Kolmarden, the stables has to be rebuild so they can safely house an adult elephant bull. As well as following the space rules, and provide a bull with a daily quality life. Until such investements are in the future budget, theres less chances for an import.
