For years it was said, now it´s going to be done. The old 'Eismeer' (in english: polar-sea) is going to be broken down. Since WW2 it wasn't propperly renovated, so its now to dangerous for keepers and animals.
Monday the first animals were brought to other zoos in Germany.
The animals witch lived 'till monday there:
0,1 Polarbear (30 years old)
1,2 Patagonian sealion
1,0 Harbor Seal
1,4 Southamerican furseal
?,? Humboldt penguin
It's a bit sad, thouh the 'Eismeer' was one of the 'Panoramas' opend along the park in 1907 and the polarbear-exhibit was (together with the lion-exibit) the first fencless carnivor exhibit.
But don't worry. For the old, sadly not rescueable (mostly plants and roots hold that thing together) 'Eismeer', there is going to be in 2011 the new one. A bit looking like the old, but way better exibits an may be some pretty cool new animals (very sure ther'll be walrusses!).
All spicies listed above will return, exept the sealions.
And now a few pics from the old one:
Penguins:

Furseals and Harbor Seal (former also walrus):

Polarbear (in the back) and sealions, seperated with a moat.

edit: Forgot to tag it as Hamburg, can any admin do it for me?
