The end of the little grey jobs??

The akikiki is a small grey bird may not look remarkable but its rarity is. Only 5 are thought to be remaining in the wild _and could be extinct within months.
WHY,the biggest threat is from malaria carrying mosquitoes. For many years this honey creeper has lived in the lush cool mountains of the Hawaiin island of kauai which was out of the reach of non native mosquitoes but rising temperatures from climate change have enabled the mosquitoes to move further up the peaks with terrible consequences. With no resistance to mosquitoe born diseases the birds are falling victim to avian malaria which is fatal to honey eater adults.
The authorities have set up a captive population of 50 birds(fortunately it was unaffected by recent bush fires).With a lot of luck this captive population may save the species. The authorities are also undertaking a massive eradication of mosquitoes.
I find that this kind of story is going to repeat itself more and more!!!

There already has been a similar discussion about the Hawaiian parrotbill which the aikikiki was also brought up.

From what I can tell, this is a pretty tough situation. In addition to the fires and mosquitoes, local opposition to bring the birds to a safer location off the island is met with local opposition and resistance.

As if the situation isn't tough enough, I sometimes wonder if mankind deserves the world that includes animals
