The football thread

It verges on cricket-level boredom.

Heresy! Cricket is the most fascinating of sports. It is true that conscientious cricket spectators may occasionally fall asleep after a good lunch, but they usually wake up in time for the tea interval :)

Pootle- scotland invented golf, and european football (but of course the english claimed it at is was more believable that a country like england could invent it, and scotland couldn't)

Here's a topic to discuss: ball boys, bradford, and barcelona.

And The meaning of the word 'golf' is just an urban myth. I was told this at the Euro quiz, when I was in P6. I however don't know the original origin.

What a dissapointment that golf doesn't stand for that. I wonder what it does stand for if anything?

Not sure about Scotland inventing football (as we know it), You can have your Golf, Whisky and Haggis and be happy with that. Also, Happy Burns Night to you tomorrow epickoala123.

People who don't or can't appreciate the game of Test Cricket bemuse me. I have been to a few Ashes Matches and there is really no better sporting event as a spectator.

Can we stop talking about different sports and focus on european football/soccer?

please note that when I say football on this thread I mean european football/soccer, unless I state otherwise.

from Wikipedia:

The word golf was first mentioned in writing in 1457 on a Scottish statute on forbidden games as gouf, possibly derived from the Scots word goulf (variously spelled) meaning "to strike or cuff". This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning "bat," or "club," and the Dutch sport of the same name. But there is an even earlier reference to the game of golf, and it is believed to have happened in 1452 when King James II banned the game because it kept his subjects from their archery practice.

There is a persistent urban legend claiming that the term derives from an acronym "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden". This is a false etymology, as acronyms being used as words is a fairly modern phenomenon, making the expression a backronym

No, golf was invented when Bullroarer Took swung his club at the head goblin, Golfimbul, knocking his head clean off and sailing 100 yards where it landed in a rabbit hole.

Every one knows that.

golf is a pretty boring sport anyway. I quite like tennis, depending on the player I'm watching. Golf doesn't have the same attraction.

Womens beach volleyball, definitely a highlight of the olympics for me! ;)

(Even though Great Britain lost, just proving how great it is! :D)

Well, be fair, the UK isn't know for it beaches. Or athletic prowess come to think of it :D

How can you not be a fan of beach volleyball?

I am not a fan. I also dislike nudity in mainstream movies. I think that there are other kinds of videos to watch and indoor events to attend if one wishes to see naked (or skimpily clad) women, and it really doesn't have a place in mainstream movies or sports.

We have some nice beaches, although we also have a lot of pebble beaches as well which probably aren't the best as a good beach volleyball surface! :)

As for athletic prowess, for a country our size I think we're punching well above our weight... ;)

As for football, my team are languishing in the bottom half of the Championship, it's got to the point where I think a draw is as good as a win and our chairman is embroiled in a money laundering scandal, so not the greatest season ever. But at least our rivals are on the verge of relegation so we may actually get another local derby next season... :D In the words of Eric Idle, always look on the bright side of life! ;)
I should point out that I'm a Blues fan! (Not that I currently enjoy admitting that. :()
