Marwell Wildlife The Future

Even calling yourself 'representitive' is still a bit crazy. I don't think I've met anyone else on the site who claims such things.

Anyway, the new restaraunt, Cafe Graze, did open today. On the website it states how in time one will be able watch savannah species such as giraffes, zebras and ostrich in the valley which will contain a waterhole, so plans still running strong there. I'll be going to Oryx Club next week, so I'll be able to see for myself what the view will be like. :)

If they used the two paddocks at the edge, they would presumably keep the couple of mature trees which the gorillas would be able to move under? Even more exciting would be if they took in some of the land north of the somali ass paddock and used this wooded area too.

Ernesto and Arica are designed to be a breeding pair; though they are mostly kept apart so as to retain the anteater's solitary nature, but are still able to see each other through a door seperating their indoor dens. I'll have to ask a keeper whether they've mixed them on an occasion or more already, but if not then it will be the case that they will be mixed relitivley breifly in order for mating to occur. ;)

well they are no-where near the african biome so the could be moved, dalek?

on another thred, someone said about them in the african forest biome, i thought they came from the savvanah?

marwell dalek - you speak as if you are the zoo manager, we do not know wether any of this "master plan" will actually be built! so please stop saying this and that will happen, its the future who knows what will happen

This post cannot pass without comment. I can put up with your extraordinary spelling and your inane comments - even though they do clog up the forums on which they appear, and seriously diminsish the enjoyment that is to be had from Zoo Beat - but your rudeness towards other posters, which has been seen on several occasions now, is just unpleasant. I do not know "Marwell Dalek", and I'm sure he or she can defend him or herself, but the comments they made were interesting and appeared to come from a position of some knowledge. Even if this were not the case, your dismissive response would be out of order!

Indeed, Marwell does tend to class the sitatunga as wetland animals such as taun says; in the wild, they actually jump into lakes and rivers to escape predation, sometimes even submerging themselves. They're current paddock is in the planned Eurasian Boreal Forest biome, so they'd move to West African Wetlands, centered around the current hippo & flamingo paddocks. I'd imagine them moving into the current peccary enclosure or one of the two hippo paddocks if they do.

Sitatunga are also very much forest antelope, often seen in the forest clearings of the congo. I believe they are pretty much drawn to water, wetland savannahs or swampy forests.

I believe they have Spatulate/elongated hooves specially designed for walking in marshy ground. To keep them on hard ground in captivity is therefore not ideal.

(a bit annoyed) id just like to point out that not all animals will be moving because of this master plan, i imagine alot of animals will be staying where they are, and the sitatunga are most probably one of them!

and dalek could you refrain from using the word "so theyd move" we dont know for sure what exactly is happening!

I understand that, but after a talk from James Cretney (Marwell's new cheif exec) he did sound pretty strict in the way he wants to set things out, actually setting their animals in the correct biome areas. ;) Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

I'd just like to point out that whether Marwell Dalek is in the know or not, he still phrased what he wrote as a possibility not as something that is definitely happening

Sorry but Giant Anteater births are getting far more common in zoos in the last few years i have seen at least 4 youngsters been carried by the female in the U.K and Europe.

am i right in thinking that colchester have a baby anteater?

i trust you (honest) is there any chance you could write a whole report on whats happening?

I'll try my best. As I said, this is based on information given in zoo news, information from Bill Hall and a shaded map showing the biome areas I once saw.

BRITISH WOODLAND:
Will be based in what used to the amusement area along with extra surrounding woodland. Will comprise of walks consisting of native plants and information on Marwell's in-situ conservation, how visitors can discover and help local widlife, and will exhibit some appropiate animals like Dormice.

SOUTH AMERICAN COAST:
Centered around the current penguin enclosure.

EAST AFRICAN SAVANNAH:
Main highlight will be the African Valley, housing rhino, giraffe, ostrich, zebra, etc. with a safari ride of some kind being built through it. Hunting Dogs likely to return, as well as the possibility of lions.

AFRICAN SEMI-DESERT:
Centered around the current grevy's zebra/oryx paddock.

AFRICAN ARIDLANDS:
Centered around, well, Aridlands!

EURASIAN STEPPE:
Prezwalski's Horse, Bactrian Camel, etc. Possible locations include their current paddock or the one currently holding Ankole.

CONGO RAINFOREST:
Includes the current Okapi complex. Will take up the whole area between Aridlands and the Hall Gardens, and will feature a gorilla exhibit among other things.

AUSTRALIAN BUSH:
Includes the current Bush Walk & Encounter Village. Nearly complete, with phase two, a paddock containing the emus and kangaroos being finished this year.

EURASIAN BOREAL FOREST:
Centred around the current sitatunga paddock. The Amur Tigers & Leopards will likely be moved here.

INDONESIAN FOREST:
Centred around Life in the Trees. Possibility of Komodo Dragons.

MADAGASCARN FOREST:
Centred arond World of Lemurs. Pretty much there already.

HIMALAYAN CLOUD FOREST:
Centered around Roof of the World. Again, pretty much done with the possibility of only one or two additions.

WEST AFRICAN WETLANDS:
Centered around the Semi-Aquatic Mammal House and Flamingo Enclosures.

SOUTH AMERICAN GRASSLAND:
Centered around the current rhea/capybara paddock. Possibility of Maned Wolves returning.

SOUTH AMERICAN RAINFOREST:
Centered around the current Entrance & Gift Shop area. These will be relocated to the top of Treetops hill, and the Ark Gift shop would likely become the new tropical house.

This is what I know so far. Of course, changes could be made at any time. ;)
