Marwell Wildlife The Future

I think they were intending to originally create one breeding group to live in Life of the Trees, so whilst the exhibit was under construction, two females arrived to live in the other fossa enclosure. The five you can see from the bridge are all males again from London, and I think it was only shortly before they arrived that genetic tests revealed the females were too closely related to breed with the males. Ideally then, either the males or females at Marwell should head off to another collection where they're isn't such a risk and find more suitable animals to create just one group.

oh dear, big mistake for marwell, lets hope some more suitable breeding adults turn up

You Guys are welcome to submit plans to what you would like to see done to Marwell (nothing realistic, just a bit of fun)
For the African Savvanah:
Black/White Rhino, ostrich, Roan and sable antilope, lechwe, zebra, wildebeast, giraffe, gazelle ect...
Area around savanah:
Lions, cheetah, Hyena, Wild Dog

OK, going by Catman's opinions, I'll start with the East African Savannah biome. Don't forget, this what I would want to see:

- Cheetah & Serval enclosures remain same. Bat-Eared Foxes moved to the second serval enclosure.
- Former jaguar enclosure and a strip of the grass above it being adapted for Hunting Dogs.
- Marabou Storks, Night Herons & Little Egrets move to African Wetlands biome. Crowned Cranes & Cattle Egrets added, with an extra wing built on for the Secretary Birds.
- Colobus & Diana Monkeys move into Congo forest biome. Area taken up by Vervet monkeys instead.
- Lion enclosure to be built on part of the current Gemsbok/Hartman's Zebra paddock.
- Amur Leopards to move to Boreal forest biome. Hamadryas Baboons move in.
- Valley field to accomadate White Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Eland, Kudu, Roan Antelope, Waterbuck, Nyala & Ostrich. Giraffe remain in current house, Nyala move to Dama Gazelle quaters, Heart of Africa redesinged for Savannah animals, with the white rhinos, hartman's zebras, pouched rats, bosc monitors and other small savannah animals living there. Giraffe and current bongo paddock joined to valley.
- Port-Lymnpe esque safari ride running through the valley.
- (This is wishful thinking on my part) Right side of the valley being developed for African Elephants.

Yes, very unlikely but fun! :p

Elephants, well James Cretney played quite a lot of elephant polo in Thailand, so there's always the chance he has a soft spot to keep them at Marwell. And elephants are such a magnificent species that needs to be shown in the best possible habitat, and the valley would really make Marwell stand out as a fantastic elephant habitat.

My thoughts based on predominatly redevloping where there is already ongoing work or empty enclosures.

Savanah Valley - Open up the paddocks from the Giraffes to the Gemsbok to be part of a giant exhibit as well as the new land. Animals to be Giraffe, Congo Buffalo, Sable Antelope, Bongo, Zebra, Gemsbok, Roan Antelope, Ostrich, Nyala, Rhino, Kudu and Crowned Crane.

- Move the Somali Wild Ass to be with the Scimitar Horned Oryx in the large paddock in the middle of the park.

- Continue to develop the old Wild Ass paddock into a Gorilla house. Also develop the Zebra and Ostrich paddock opposite (which would now be empty) into enclosures for Chimps, Orang Utans and Bonobos creating a Land of the Great Apes exhibit.

- In the old Rhino and Kudu paddock add some large Asian species (it is in the Asian area of the park now anyway). Either Asian Elephants, Indian Rhino, Gaur or Water Buffalo.

- In the empt adjacent Serval enclosure have some Leopard Cats.

- Move the current Red Pandas to the Roof of the World exhibit. Have Racoons in the Red Panda enclosure next to the Waterbuck (doesn't follow the biome theme but I like them).

- Redevelop the old Anteater site, Baribusa and Pudu enclosures into woodland site for Brown Bears.

- Stick with the plans mentioned in this thread for the cafe, gift shop, tropical house and Komodo Dragons.

- Merge the flamingo enclosure into the Pygmy Hippo paddock so the Hippos have an outdoor pool. Move the flamingos to the waterfowl and squirrel monkey exhibit.

- Build a new enclosure for the Secretary Birds on the old Jaguar site.

- On the site of the Nocutrnal House, Nyala and Secretary Birds build a large reptile house so that large snakes and large crocodillians can be kept.

Only problem is that I think the rhino paddock is far too small for elephants. ;)

Some other stuff

The african elephants have a pool and a mud wallow.
Cape buffalo added to african vally
Nerby bat eared fox, have aviary for croned cranes ect...
The path goes into the current tiger enclosure (no longer there) I mean the nyala paddok expandes into enclosure for african monkeys
Nile crocs are added to the collection, african reptile house by savvanah area,
also asian reptile house.
Slender-snouted crocs added to the collection, so that all of the African crocs, which still include the west african dwarf crocodile, they are still in the colection, so all 3 of the african croc spieces are kept together

Got the Winter issue of Marwell news, and I can confirm a few things of discussion within this topic about the zoo from it:

- The anteaters have been mixed several times recentley, but it turns out Arica is below breeding age and they will mix them again once she is a little older.
- Official opening of the African Valley is hoped to take place in Easter 2009.
- The Amphibian Centre opening date hasn't being confirmed, but the species on show have:

Milk tree frogs
Puerto Rican Crested Toads
Dyeing Poison Dart Frogs
Blue-thighed Dart Frogs
Danube Crested Newts
Golden Mantellas

anteaters - how many years will they wait to try again?

amphibian centre - sounds good, why has it taken so long?

polar bears.. dont make me laugh please

its not impossable for them to get polar bears!
its just very unlikley as there are only 2 polar bears in britan, but i cant see any of them giving them up, nor them importing some

Anteaters - I think once she is around 5 years old, which is in about a year and a half.
Amphibians - Complications with the bio-security measures. The centre needs to be incredibly secure so that the killer fungus cannot get in.

Anteater reproduction: is sexual age at maturity around 5 years?
(what are the basics about for M and F)

Are these all selected on their basis of being threatened (as per instructions of the Amphibian Crisis EAZA guidelines)? Is the focus on native European species, Madagascan amphibians and South American species alone?

Amphibian conservation: any more species to be added?

A Malayan tapir habitat: is this a rumour or more concrete (someone on this thread suggested such like)?

Yup, as I stated in the above post.

Yes. The Amphibian Ark is desinged as a completely bio-secure holding centre for various amphibian species in danger of extinction due to a killer fungus which is already starting to kill different kinds from the face of the Earth one by one. In co-ordination with zoos all across thw world, the ark will hold endangered species until scientists develop a remedy for the fungus, at which point these amphibians will be able to re-populate their former habitat.

Yes, over time the ark will hold all manner of amphibians.

I haven't heard anything about a new tapir habitat. If I get the chance I'll have to ask Bill Hall, cos if anyone knows about something at the zoo he will.

dalek, catman created this thread so we could share idea on what we think marwell should build

im pretty sure he is just suggesting some possible exhibits they could build
