The inspiration for dragons, Is this real?

The other side of this question is whether these flying lizards are the inspiration for dragons.
In Borneo perhaps. But in China the image is very old. In Europe it is quite old. Did these cultures know of Borneo's flying lizards that long ago? I doubt it.

By the way, @DavidBrown, in the original planning for the California Academy of Sciences there was going to be a substantial treatment of the flying creatures of Borneo. Another great idea that didn't make it to opening day!
 
zooman, I think that you said that you went to Borneo? There is an entire "flying" fauna there in the Dipterocarp forests of gliding frogs, snakes, lizards, and the "flying lemurs".

Hi David,

Totally missed these and other flying animals in Borneo, it was very much a river safari experience, maybe next time.
