Adelaide Zoo The Last Elephants

I think you may find the last elephant (Asian cow) was sent out to Monarto zoo untill it's death. Ben may be able to put a date to that.

Adelaide is a small city zoo with no room to expand (only 8 hectares). With the addition of the extra space of Monarto most of the large hoofed animals have moved out there, but Adelaide still retains a small selection of large mammals including brazilian tapir, giraffe, zebra and common hippo. The elephant exhibit at Adelaide would have been considered woefully small by current standards.

adelaide is a progressive, successful zoo with a bright future worthy of internatio-

wait a minute!!!!!! did you just say?

No more Zebra

no no, that can't be right. i thought we liked adelaide zoo?

cos if there is one thing i've learn't at zoochat, its that in order to survive, a zoo must pander (or panda, as it may be) to the publics expectations. and that entails keeping a stock-standard A-Z of zoo animals at all costs.

i find the fact that adelaide zoo has no zebra (let alone gorilla or elephants) truly laughable.

what a mediocre zoo it must be. clearly its going to eventually close down due to poor attendance figures. i'm sure most adelaidians would rather hop on a quick flight to melbourne or sydney and visit a real zoo that ever bother spending the afternoon at their own one.

To make way for the Panda's many species have gone, mainly hoofstock. Exotic Ungulate wise all thats left are Giraffe, Common Hippo, Pygmy Hippo(I think), Giraffe, Peccaries and both tapirs, hardly an A-Z

Its going to be very interesting what happens when the panda's go, i believe they want to put gorillas in the exhibit.

Since Adelaide zoo is very small (8 Hectares) and Monarto is now even bigger than before it maybe a good thing that they need to focus on what animals and exhibits they can have on such a small area which is a problem for some of the older city zoo's, I just feel large animals need large areas, I think animals such as Giraffe, Hippo's and elephants live better lives in herds with plently of space to move, the days of cramped up large animals "should now" be long gone with the move to put them into our open range zoo's.

Sarcasm aside:)
Adelaide is in a wonderful position to prove that small successful modern zoos don't need to have the big ones. Of course Panda will help but hope fully once they are gone Adelaide will be able to continue paving a new road.

I still found it a nice zoo to visit beautiful gardens and some other interesting exhbits.
