The Loveliest Bird Calls

Hi Zoochatters,

When you go to zoos and parks (and backyards if your lucky), you can hear a variety of different bird calls. What is your favourite?

I love the wide range of sounds made by the Grey Shrike Thrush (Colluricincla harmonica) of Australia. It is a rather drab looking bird but it's call is absolutely mesmerizing.

I would second the Australian magpie and add the kookaburra!

Any of the Macaw calls, i no they tend to shatter your eardrums but its a terrific sound!

Loon (I heard them only once in person but it was a sound I couldn't forget)
Variety of exotics at zoos which would take me all day to list

There are so many wunderfull bird-sounds but the one which springs in mind first to me is the booming-sound of displaying Crowned pigeons ( all 3 species ).

There are plenty of Northern mockingbirds around here, I enjoy their varied calls.

I feel sorry for anyone who has never experienced the song of the nightingale.

Yesterday I was at Healsville Sanctuary in Victoria Australia, showing around friends from the UK who had to see a Koala.

While touring the zoo I took them through the huge Lyre Bird aviary genuinely not expecting to see one.

Just before we left the aviary about 10 feet away on a slight hill stood a Lyre Bird in full display we watched him mimicking at least 10 different birds! I was so excited unfortunately my guests missed the significance of what they were seeing and hearing....
