The Nonsense Thread

He was sent a Google Images link for his education. You're all welcome. Surely you all saw the South Park Trapper Keeper episode?

Anyway, Trapper Keepers will make it to Oz one day - we seem to get the latest trends later than everywhere else anyway.

For example, political incorrectness is still the norm here. We have a place/structure in my state that is officially named "Chinaman's Hat". :D

There used to be a hot spring in Yellowstone called "Chinaman Spring" the legend goes that a concession run by Chinese immigrants had a laundry service there (they washed cloths in the spring, that would never be allowed to happen today because of environmental concerns). The story goes that one day it Geysered unexpectedly (Yellowstone is the geyser capital of the world after all) and threw the cloths all around for hundreds of feet.

Due to political correctness the name has been changed to "Chinese Spring."

I've seen Yorkey's Nob.

There's also a town in Queensland called 1770, between Gladstone and Bundaberg.

"Chinaman" is a pejorative. Welcome to the 21st century folks. Also, not all Far Eastern Asians wear cone-shaped hats.

What I find interesting is that the people most offended by such terms don't even belong to the demographic. At least that's what I have ascertained over the years.

And what I have found is that they are usually a minority group, so they have grown thick skin to not show that they are easily offended - it's a coping mechanism. Not being vocal, or laughing at the jokes, doesn't necessarily translate to not taking offence.

This recent Aussie video has been on international news lately. I am pretty sure that Asians would find it offensive. Had I been on the train, I would have been very tempted to punch her in the face.

No, but the Chinese workers that migrated around the world in the 1800s did wear those hats.

I was going to watch the World Cup but there was a baseball game. I can't believe Pawtucket blew the lead in the ninth. They should have taken out the pitcher as soon as the batters started getting runs off of him. Also, the supposedly reduced concession prices were still outrageous. I could cook an entire meal, no multiple meals, for the cost of one item, including dessert and drinks. At least the Red Sox beat the Astros by a huge margin, it was very nice seeing that on the Fenway scoreboard. But it looked more beautiful with Pawtucket winning as well.

Well, the Astros have been showing big signs of improvement. They may be one of the worst teams now, but I think they may present a problem for other teams down the road. I just hope the same can ve said about the Rangers. This whole season has been like an episode of M*A*S*H.

That's ok. One day we might understand the soccer.

The other 6.7 billion people on the planet understand it. :p Though having said that, it's probably just Texas that doesn't get soccer: according to news sites, World Cup games were viewed by up to 15m Americans per game (more than Monday Night NFL games) and keep in mind that America did not play in 60 games! Soccer is definitely a big deal in America - they say that there were more American viewers of the soccer games that USA played in than there were viewers of the NBA finals!

That's just because of the foreigners:p;)

No I don't think they mean expats or tourists - I think they mean American citizens. I see what you mean though: maybe a large proportion of viewers were born overseas and/or are first generation Americans.

Most of my friends over here that watched the World Cup are either first generation Americans or their families are still really connected with their original cultures. While no doubt a lot of Americans not within this category probably really like watching the sport (I do know some that are like this), a larger population is likely comprised of immigrants, first generation, and those still connected with their overseas cultures.

Worcester MA has the Worcester World Cup, it's some kind of tournament played between all of the different nationalities/ethnicities that are present there (and there are a lot, the whole city is a league of nations).
