Yes they are.

Chester also keeps the only Visayan Tarictics in the country. London's female is probably a female samar tarictic, I need to contact them about it.

There is an old Yacare Caiman still living at Mablethorpe seal sanctuary. Auchingarrich wildlife centre may still have Corsac Fox and Chamois.

Whipsnade have the last two Gaur in the UK. Island Amazon adventure also have a pair of Prehensile-tailed porcupines, I think also the only ones.

Someone mentioned Polar and Sun bears earlier in this thread. The rare species conservation centre in Sandwich, Kent, still feature a photo of a juvenile Sun Bear on their site, apparently being hand-reared (or checked over before being returned to its mother). There is no other information on this animal but as they have other animals not mentioned on their site such as cheetahs I'm inclined to think that they may have Sun bears, or are rearing an infant on behalf of another collection.

A couple of years ago I read that 'Amazing Animals' private collection in Oxforshire had a single polar and Asiatic black bear. Does anybody know if they still maintain bears at this collection? If not, then Dudley zoo will be the only collection to have Asiatic Black Bears.

Thanks Hadley, I didn't know about the Mablethorpe one. A keeper at Blackpool told me they had the only ones in Britian, so he must not know either.
 
I think it's very old. The exotic animals remaining at the sanctuary are few, and appear to be a hangover from when it was Mablethorpe animal gardens, I don't think they are replacing them when they die out.

I believe you are referring to the Jim Clubb collection here- doesn't he train animals for TV commercials and films too? I think he still had the bears within the last two years but not sure about now.

I found out recently via the Forum that most of Southport's Mandrill group went here when it closed- he already had a trio of Mandrills so must now have about a dozen in total.

Glasgow Zoo had four Asiatic Black bears before it closed down- I think two may have been euthanased and the other two could have gone to join Dudley's? (not sure though...)
 
Don't forget Chester's pair of Mauritius kestrels. How about Colchester's striped & spotted hyaenas? I suspect there are many more . . . .

I am actually very surprised that Chester have the only mauritius kestrels, I eould have thought, now the species is so common in it's habitat that other zoos may want to exhibit it to show how conservation can have an impact.

Jersey's echo parakeets are also unique.
 
Colchester may bnot have the Spotted Hyaena any more. THey were down to one several years ago now.. A pity a few Safari Parks don't try to display this species...its very 'African'
 
I think colchester still has the old male spotted, and recently established a pair of Striped. This was shortly after the Africa Alive ones bred, so maybe one or more striped at colchester came from this litter. About 15 years ago, mabye longer, the Chipperfield organisation bred Striped Hyaenas - I think Heythrop Zoo (amazing animals) had at least one of these individuals and may still have some left. As with the polar/ Asiatic Black bears, any news from this collection is 3 or 4 years old so its hard to tell.
 
I think Dudley may have bred Spotted Hyaenas in the 1960-80's period. They certainly exhibited them and I seem to remember an article about breeding too.
 
With reference to the subject of the thread...is the Cat Survival Trust in Stevenage still operating? I seem to remember them having the only group of Bobcats in this country.

It would appear not. The latest website I can find has not been updated since 2002.
