The Only Ones In Britain

Birdland has the UKs only Carmine Bee Eaters, Grey Tree Pie & Blue Winged Minla (according to ISIS)

and of course England's only King Penguins :D
There are loads of bee-eaters in a private collection in Cobham, so I don't think that they can be classed as the only ones.

Correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure London has a species off elephant shrew, i remember seeing it in the Clore before it was changed to the rainforest exhibit. Im assuming it has moved on?

It was the same species and I think it went to MArwell.

I wish more zoos would get bonobos as i visited them at twycross and they were the most active and fun animals to watch.

They'd be a big hit at any zoo

What happened to Colchester's rocky mountain goats? They had around 4 when Zoo Days was shown last year, and ISIS still lists 0.2?

Lakeland Oasis have/had a single elephant shrew.

Marsh mongooses only at Folly Farm (and Ballaugh which is technically not UK).

I visited at the beginning of May and the Rocky Mountain Goats had left the collection then, but the staff we asked didn`t know where they had gone to so they could have moved to another collection in the U.K,but some how i don`t think so.

I think there's quite a few collections in the UK that have kea. They are actually relatively common overseas (that is, relative to other NZ birds), and there are also quite a number being kept by private aviculturists also, especially in the UK and Europe.

And yet there are none in Australia

Unique Species

Re "South Lakes has Belted Ruffed Lemurs, which I never thought were a valid subspecies until I saw them" - NewQuay Zoo also have the Belted Black and White Ruffed Lemurs although they don't advertise them as such but they are!

Re Polar Bears - There are in fact 2 Polar Bears in the UK at the moment, Mercedes at Edinburgh Zoo (as mentioned by others on here) who is going to be moved to Highland Wildlife Park. And there is also a Polar Bear in a private collection.

Trotters World of Animals has the only pair of Canadian Lynx in the UK (unless anyone knows different) and they are a breeding pair with a cub at the moment. And I think they have the only Common Palm Civets too.

Palm Civet`s can be seen at Five Sisters Zoo Park,a new collection in Axminster has them as well and I`m sure I`ve forgot one,so I`m afraid Trotters only have the only Canadian Lynx in the U.K.

Edinburgh up till a couple of years ago held and successfully bred Malayan palm civets, does anyone know where these animals went to?

Thats a good question because the Common Palm Civets at Five Sisters are supposed to have come from Edinburgh, and they arrived there about the time the Malayans disappeared from Edinburgh,so could it be a case of mis-taken identity?

In Britain, only Twycross have Tufted Deer (subspecies michianus). They bred for the first time this year.

As far as I'm aware, the Chousingha have been absent from Britain for some time.

They had 1:5:0 Chousingha when I stopped working there in 2003 and only 2 other zoos had them in Europe, think the total was 3:7:0 back then. I was curious to know if there had been any improvement as they are such a great antelope. Was also hoping to go see them again.

only 3 collections have kept Chousingha outside india, Howletts, Port lympne and paris (the latter still have them) The ones at the aspinall parks died out because of lack of introduced blood, and the fact that John Aspinall didn't like to share exclusive species

In 2002 I saw Chousingha at both Paris zoos (Vincennes and Jardin des Plantes) and I seem to remember (West) Berlin have also had them in the recent past so that's at least five.
