They now have 2 Coatis been held in the outdoor enclosure for the Blue and Yellow Macaws, also next year the Toco Toucans will be having a new aviary built outside on the raised grass area, they have also built apond at the far end of the outside area and fenced it off this could be for Asian Small-clawed Otters as this was a species mentioned to me about 5 years ago that they wanted.Inside the Meerkats have now moved in to the old Cotton-topped Tamarin enclosure, this place now has 8 species of mammal on show,4 species of birds,at least 16 species of reptiles, about 10 species of amphibians,30+ species of fish and about 20 species of inverts.Every time i visit it seems to have added something new or improved in some small way.

Woah - seem to have missed some stuff here. Been a while since I went to Stapeley - what are the eight mammals?

Yeah same, it's been a while since i visited.

Have the Tamarin's left the collection then or have they moved enclosure?

I may have to pay a visit soon. The last time I visited they had just opened the shark tank.

The mammal species are Coati,Cotton-topped Tamarin,Meerkat,Striped Skunk,African Striped Grass Mouse,Turkish Spiny Mouse,Accia Rat and Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec.

they had just got the skunks when i left and had only just got the toucans cos i planted up their aviary i did try and make them get free flying birds for the tropical house but they wouldnt do it also on a different note theres a curly haired tarantula living wild in the tropical house and european tree frogs all over and indian sticks everywhere

There's a tarantula loose in there?!?

I'm gonna keep an eye out, I can't stand spiders!

Snakes- no problem- never have had, I like to handle them...
Spiders- no thanks! I don't think an arachnophbia course would help me either.

I'm the same Pertinax. I can't even stand money spiders in my room, yet I love snakes and even other creepy crawlies.

Well I'm not that bad... But large spiders I'm definately not very keen on. I'm sure its an inherent 'aversion' thing- I was never afraid of snakes and kept and handled them without even thinking about it. Like you, other 'creepy crawlies' don't worry me like spiders, either.

my mum's visiting tomorrow and spotted a link on their website about expansion plans including soon to go on display lesser hairy screaming armadillo and sugar gliders.

If the expansion exhibits are similar in quality to the recent coati exhibit, i'd be very disappointed. It was a very poor, narrow enclosure just tacked on to the outside of the building and with very little enrichment.

However, those species will probably go into a new tank in the zoo room i'd imagine...

Got to admit previous to my comment at the start of this thread i`m now think the place is going backwards in terms of quality as they have got rid of the Sharks on the grounds they where costing to much to keep and converted the exhibit they were in to house the Meerkats, also alot of it is now starting to look very tired and worn out.As for the garden centre well thats looking very run down would not be surprised to find out that the place is in serious financial trouble!!!!

I thought the sharks were in the deep themed pool opposite what used to be a ray pool (now a duck pond)?

Not any more the Duck pond is still their but the Sharks have gone and the pool altered and themed for the Meerkats.

The Meerkats have recently moved into the shark pond opposite the ducks as they couldn't keep the sharks anymore, i know this as i went to stapely with chester zoo. Stapely should have fossa, what do u think?

Personnaly i think they should give the Coatis a better exhibit before they get Fossa as that is the worst Coati exhibit i have seen in the U.K,and Fossa would need alot better of an enclosure than that.
