I visited for the first time earlier this year and it had very much the feel of a place that was running out of money, I'm sad to say. the (apparently new!) caiman exhibit went in straight at number 1 on my list of bad animal exhibits in British zoos, and the nicest part of the site were the domestic animal paddocks. Being familiar with the very similar collection in North Anston I know that this type of collection, with the same entrance fee (give-or-take) can be much better. Admittedly North Anston has a bigger local population, so this is perhaps not a fair comparison - but on the evidence of my last visit it's even holding up well with the ever-expanding YWP now within reach so it's a concept that can work.
Coming back to Long Sutton, I can't really say I'll miss the place, though I'm glad I made it there before the end (even if I wasn't seeing it at its best). It's still a shame, however, that another small collection has succumbed to economics.
