the scariest moment in a zoo

mine would have to be Barcelona Zoo, where they have an "out of sight" ditch around the lions, i turned round and all i could see was this lion sitting in the middle of a field with no barriers!

being bitten on the knee by a New Zealand Fur seal at Taronga, being... chased by an emu in Backyard to Bush, red kangaroo. In other zoos black swans, ostrich, sambar deer and Cape Barren Geese have all frightened me.

Why are you being chased by so many animals, and how did the Fur Seal bite you?!

I knew Emus are ones to watch (judging by the accounts in this post). Heading into the Backyard to Bush from the bottom end there was an Emu waiting just on the other side of the gate. I hesitated for a while before I braved it and slowly walked in.

The scariest zoo moments for me are all in my dreams, however they all involve big cats, whether they are on the loose or I am in their enclosures. I don't know what it is about them.

I think I once p****d off a Gorilla at Melbourne Zoo. That's about it.

When I was doing Jnr Kepper at Auckland Zoo I and my group were allowed to enter the cheetah enclosure with the zoos 2 brother cheetahs. At one stage we were all sitting on the grass at the back of the enclosure when while 1 of the boys was resting a few metres infront of us holding our attention, the other brother ran past us! I was only 1 person from him! It definately got my heart pumping.

Though not at a zoo still...When I visited a lake about an hour from Oftringen, Switzerland earlier this year, my friend her family and I fed the swans bread. I had honestly never been so close to a swan before this time. The swans at first just took the bread calmly and wandered away to the water to eat it but I never before noticed just how big swans really are and when one snuck up behind me and stole the small bit of bread I was trying to get a timid smaller bird (dnt know what it was) from my hand I started 2 get really scared! I am a very short person and at only age 14 at the time the swams were huge to me!!

In Rotorua's Rainbow Springs Wildlife park my cousin was attacked by a small group of ducks as he walked past. Not scary for me but it gave even himn (a full grown samoan man) quite a scare. We laughed for ages!! O and he was wearing open-toed shoes at the time. :D

By the way easytigger I think your story is really good! Scary Stuff!!!

Scary Moments...

Well, the first two I'd say were more daunting moments. One was at Paignton, and I was walking through the ape centre watching the gorillas, as I walked along one of the viewing windows which is tainted, meaning that the enclosure isn't very clear behind, I suddenly noticed one of the gorillas sitting right beside the glass. Paignton's group are all bachelors, meaning most are large and hefty, and he was no exception to the rule. Yet the fact I could see him so close up, yet the tint made his figure shady and distorted, was both amazing and chilling. Another time was at La Palmyre Zoo, and I was watching the polar bears through underwater viewing. They were coming straight up to me, swimming towards the glass then shooting up to the surface vertically right before my eyes in an almighty splash. To have such a large, powerful creature in such an encounter certainly stays with you.

On the same day in the at Palmyre however, there was an actual scary experience. As we left the lion enclosure, we noticed a stupid man who had crossed the safety barrier and was taking a photo right through the bars of the fence, seemingly thinking that as the lions were asleep, he would be OK. But of course, lions always sleep with one eye open, and the lioness shot off the resting platform roaring like a bat out of hell, leap-running straight over to the fence, with the ignorant photographer only just getting away.

Same thing happened to me, but at London zoo; Some stupid bloke stepped over the barrier to get a photo of the tiger. Said tiger was not pleased...
The Jaguar enclosure at Dartmoor zoo is pretty scary too: The moat is pretty narrow, and it doesn't have a roof or any large amount of hotwire. I guess the boss doesn't appreciate how dangerous Jags are.
