The 'sense' thread

Let us not ignore the problem of exploding whales.

There's an old joke in which a reporter says to an Israeli, a Russian and an American, "Excuse me, can I get your opinion on the food shortage in Africa?"

The Russian says: "What's an opinion?" The American says: "What's a shortage?" and the Israeli says: "What's 'Excuse me'?"

BBC News - Boston Marathon hit by explosions

EDIT: On the news it was talking about how security has increased not only in the Boston area but also in Washington D.C., in major cities in the eastern United States, and all along the eastern coast. They also mentioned how planes will be flown over the Boston area to make sure there's nothing wrong and to make sure that the air space is clear.

Now there's an interesting twist in the case:
Mystery man on roof photographed near Boston Marathon explosions

In the bottom right you can see the second explosion.

It's now believed the bombs were shrapnel-studded pressure cookers set off by timers and hidden in backpacks:

I am thinking home-grown terrorism, but not like the British Muslims from the London bombings. I am thinking more Timothy McVeigh. Let's see where the investigation goes.

Tonight New Zealand became the 13th country to legalise marriage equality, narrowly beaten by Uruguay and hopefully narrowly beating France, who are due to vote on the issue very soon. :D

Story here: Marriage Equality Bill Passes Parliamentary Vote | Stuff.co.nz, and in many other places too :D

It didn’t matter what gender you were in Parliament tonight there were hugs and kisses all round as politicians voted to allow gay marriage.

Louisa Wall’s bill to amend the Marriage Act and allow same-sex couples to marry passed its third reading 77 votes to 44 in front of a packed house.

A screening room had to be set up in another area of Parliament and people began queuing outside hours before the debate even began.

MPs shares the time allotted for speeches and around the country people gathered around to watch the historical vote take place.

The few opponents of the bill who were at Parliament, some praying during the speeches, left quietly once the final result was read.

Supporters headed out to party.
