The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore The State of the Zoo

A very intriguing read...and thanks for posting the link! The proposal for $5 million is mainly for non-animal related improvements and it is disappointing from a visitor's perspective that a new penguin exhibit is the only proposed animal attraction to be added to Maryland Zoo. The numerous behind-the-scenes renovations (drainage, barns, filtration system, perimeter fence, etc) are vital to the zoo, but those sort of things will not halt the decline in attendance. I thought that in recent years there was a demand for an expanded elephant yard?

I love this zoo and have so many great memories as a child. It's a shame that the zoo has declined over the past decade. The zoo can only hope that attendance levels rise as the economy picks up and more money is dumped into the zoo.

I think this is a very solid zoo in terms of average exhibit quality, but it's obviously lacking in overall size and attractions. It is sad to me that they are having such financial trouble and are not going to do much in terms of new and improved exhibits over the next 5 years.

What I find interesting about this document is that it is an inside look at how a funding agency looks at a zoo and what a zoo's finances can be like.

Each time someone here posts "the xxx zoo ought to demolish that old exhibit" or "the xxx zoo should build a new yyy exhibit" this document suggest part of the issue that has to be addressed by zoos

Granted, The Maryland Zoo is more crippled than most but it is not so unique really

Well the Maryland Zoo is adding a Hellbender exhibit, I assume to the Maryland Wilderness area. They're likely taking over an exhibit that was previously occupied by something else.

Pretty cool animal.
