Its remarkable how one population can be formed from just a handfull of specimens, in the example, there are 300 wombats (hairy-nosed) now, from just 6 introduced founders (if the info is correct) and if additional wombats were not released. The simmilar example with the other two marsupial species (brush-tailed betong and rock wallaby, with population of 1,500 and 200, respectively, from just 11 and 11 founder animals, respectively).
Despite inbreeding, the population recovers and I suppose more and more from the descendent animals are becoming genetically more diverse than their founders.
Such projects should be implemented for all threatened species who can adapt to life on Island.
