From photos and other reviews

Yes, reviews and photos on here are reliable as many ZooChatters are very knowledgeable. But that doesn't mean that it will be their favorite zoo. You can be all excited about seeing something that many people like a lot, but when you see it, it's not your thing. Sort of my first rollercoaster ride ever when I was younger. My mother loved coasters, so I decided to try them too, thinking I would be enthused. Not so much.
SDZ will probably rank as #1 on jusko's zoo list. But I'm just trying to say don't confirm something as your favorite until you've seen it.

1San Diego Zoo (june 2012)...

Might go to SDWAP so if we do that will def go on list too!!!

I would move that from a "might" to a "definite." Many people (possibly even myself) actually prefer it to the zoo. If it is a choice between that and Sea World, I would say skip Sea World. (Actually I would tell everyone to skip Sea World no matter how much time and money they have).

1) Le Parc Des Felins
2) Northwest Trek
3) Memphis Zoo
4) Nashville Zoo
5) Dallas Zoo
6) San Diego Safari Park
7) Houston Zoo
8) Fort Worth Zoo
9) Arizona Sonora Desert Museum
10) San Diego Zoo

Many people may be shocked that I put the number ten institution that far down. It is probably because I am a cat fanatic and most of their cat exhibits are small and outdated. If those were better, or if I were say a bird fanatic, then that institution would rank much higher. Also, if I were to revisit some that I have not been to in over a decade (such as Bronx and Seattle) I would likely move them into the top ten.

Going to Toronto some time in june.
And in my first one i forgot about animal kingdom.

I've realised that the zoos that I like seem to go in an order. The bigger city zoos all appear first, followed by the more compact city zoos, then open range zoos, and lastly specialist collections etc. I think open range zoos are the most enjoyable to visit but the ones that I've visited really lack the diversity that you find in more general collections (e.g. Dubbo Zoo only has one aviary and Werribee has none). I really like small city zoos (London, Antwerp, Adelaide etc.) but they fact that they can't exhibit many big species is what puts them further down the list.
Anywho, here's my list.

Without meaning to be snarky and with complete sincerity, can I ask what about the Omaha Zoo specifically makes people rank it so high?

On the plus side, the aquarium is good. They have a good outdoor giraffe exhibit. The gorilla and orang exhibits seem to be regarded as good.

On the negative side, the rain forest, desert dome, and nocturnal house have some superficially impressive features like the sand dune and the bat caves, but also have many truly subpar to wretched enclosures that seem like they would disqualify these exhibits as being truly good exhibits. Consensus here seems to be that Omaha's cat and bear exhibits are not very good.

What makes Omaha an outstanding zoo, relative to other major zoos?
