The UKIP Shipping Forecast

A little bit of satire here, ladies and gentlemen, from Mr Nicholas Pegg.

A little explanation for non-UK ZooChatters: four times a day the BBC broadcasts a radio weather forecast for shipping in the different sea areas around the British Isles. UKIP is a relatively new political party on the right of British politics. It has a few elected councillors and MEPs, who seem to a have a competition to find who can make the most loony political statement.

Aw, I meant to post this here, forgot to and have been beaten to it!

It's fantastic. (though very interested to see if anyone outside the UK can make any sense of it, even with explanation!)

And for nerd points, Nicholas Pegg is also one of the regular Dalek operators on Doctor Who.

Nope.

I do understand Daleks though.

I've made it through the 9th Doctor and am watching the first Tennant season. I am becoming a Whovian.

Exterminate!

Sorry David you need to catch up the present term is Delete I'm reliably informed

Personally I think Tennant was the best Dr. in a very long time, and I can remember John Pertwee in the role.

'Delete' is the Cybermen, not the Daleks. ;)

I do get the doctor Who jokes, but what's with the UKIP jokes? He wants the UK out of the European Union, and because the EUSSR is a dead end road they are clearly the more sensible political party in the UK.....

Being from the US, I sort of got it, but I did not find it funny, because I had to think too hard to understand it. I hear podcasters/youtubers from Britain who are anti-UKIP, so I know about them.

Before clicking I was thinking WTF is "shipping forecast", that doesn't make sense. Does it mean a forecast of shipping companies. Example: If you sent your package with company X you should expect your package to arrive a day late. If you sent your package with company-Y expect your package a day early. If you sent your package with company-Z expect your package a on-time. Then after listening, I figured out they were talking about a weather forecast designed for people in the shipping business. By the time I did not find the joke that funny, but I did "get it".

Still, it is the most sensible party they have in great britain. If you start ridiculing them, it only proves you do not have any real grounds to fight them. And ending your membership of the European Union might be the wisest thing your politicians ever did. I really hope that you will vote for 'brexit' next year, hopefully our government will follow your example. Or even better, the entire EUSSR will fall apart. How I would love to see the faces of the arrogant technocrats when that happens.

'Two countries divided by a single language'. In British English the word shipping means the movement of ships - note that the seas around the British Isles include some of the world's busiest shipping lanes with some of the world's most notoriously changeable weather. To get the full benefit of the jokes you have to understand the ritual formula which includes the names of the sea areas and the phrases describing the state of the sea, the visibility and the wind.

Note added in proof: link to the BBC map of the shipping areas (there's poetry in the names) http://static.bbci.co.uk/weather/0.5.302/images/coast-and-sea/shipping-forecast-locations.png

If you define 'sensible' as :

- being anti-European to the point of rampant xenophobia

- forming alliances with far-right groups and having a track record of chosen representatives being sexist, racist and homophobic with only a token response from leadership (New Statesman | Is Ukip a party of bigots? Let's look at the evidence)

- sending representatives ostensibly to fight for their constituents at the European parliament but having attendance rates among the worst in Europe (under 63%: British MEPs have worst European Parliament attendance record - Telegraph)

- planning to scrap investment in green energy, cut foreign aid, disregard the European Court of Human Rights and refuse entry to the UK to any foreign nation who doesn't have private health insurance (Issues - UKIP)

- opposing equal marriage, multiculturalism, and the foxhunting ban

- then I guess they are very sensible...

My definition varies from this.

They get a lot of support on the back of their EU policies but they have plenty more unpleasant policies where they came from.

EDIT: And 'ridiculing'? Yes, it's ridiculing them. It's satire! A vital part of the political environment since at least Ancient Rome and certainly since Swift.

In a pretty baffling post, this is the most baffling comment of all.

If you knew what you were writing about @Johnny, you would know that UKIP are vile, racist scum, led by a man who plays with fire to such an extent that he is either criminally naive or simply the most vile of the lot.

Thanks for proving my point.... He wants the UK out of the European Union. Staying in that Union is so harmfull to a country's economy, every politician who wants to stay in it should be brought to justice. If you see what's happening here, because of that Union..... Billions of our euro's vaporised, which already happened when they introduced it by the way, 10% of our money vanished like magic. Hundreds of thousands jobs lost, our retirement funds drained, etc etc. Every political party that fights it deserves to be treated with respect. And don't get me started about the immigration disaster....

And another zoo forum has learned how useless it is to discuss about politics with johnny.....

I did notice my list of specific reasons UKIP are thoroughly distasteful to me was neatly ignored!

It is interesting that when this thread was started this party was of little consequence but in May, UKIP did collect 27 per cent of the national vote (24 seats) in the European elections and also polled well in the locals, so it is obvious that a growing number of British voters support their views.

Since my political views are based on common sense and economics instead of ideology and a completely misplaced idea of moral superiority, it's not useless.

It always strikes me as funny that a party as the UKIP are made fun of because they want to get out. You can see in the Netherlands how the partys are f*cking up that want to stay in, despite the numerous reports that it would be better to step out.

And the EU has clearly shown it's incompetence, after it f*cked up the crisis in the Ukraine.

I'm not sure they are made fun of, so much as treated with the disdain they bring on themselves through their spouting of racist, homophobic, pig ignorant bile. They wouldn't like you, "Johnny", you being a foreigner, and a non native English speaker.

I had a conversation with a plumber friend of ours who is planning to vote UKIP next may in the national election, I asked him apart from pulling out of Europe what do they stand for and what are their policies, He didn't know but was till going to vote for them. So I asked if UKIP wins next May and decide not only to pull out of Europe, but to put the basic rate of tax up to 30% for any one on more than £10k and we all end up the poorer, financially what happens then? I'm only hoping no one can vote for a one policy party in a national election
