what about Boa constrictor? That's true. Last night I dreamt a snake. All I remember saying was 'Morelia spilota' - the one Latin name I know.

I'm pretty sure that's already been done. The one most people like is Gorilla gorilla gorilla for the western lowland gorilla.Well look at that! I did not even realise that that was the boa's scientific name!
Now here's an idea for a thread: which animals' 'common names' are actually their scientific name.

Imagine a zombie gorilla. How scary would that be!?

I am half way through the second season now. Man, this show is pretty ace. They just found the little girl. I can't wait to watch the next episode. I almost want to build an arsenal in case the zombie apocalypse comes - no wonder tschandler likes this show.
No spoilers please.
the first half of season 2 was the slow part when they changed showrunners if you got through that its all uphil to that.
I have no idea what you said there.![]()
Showrunner is an American term for the Executive Producer of a show who has the same powers as a movie director. Because each episode has a specific director the showrunner is the director above the directors.
Frank Darabont (most famous for his work with Steven King movie adaptations The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, etc. In fact several of the regulars on the Walking Dead have a history of working on his stuff (the actors that portrayed Dale, Andrea, Carol, Jim, the Soldier in the tank that became a Walker, Morales, among others are known for their work with him). He was the showrunner for the first season (which was just 6 episodes so it had the feel of a Steven Kingish Miniseries). When they got to season 2, he realized that he was better at doing movies or miniseries not TV. The first half of season 2 is infamous for being "slow" up until of course finding Sophia in the Barn. It was also a non-comic element so a lot of blame went toward Darabont. He was replaced as Showrunner by Glenn Mazzara (famous for being the Wire's showrunner) which is why the 2nd half of season 2 and season 3 have a lot more gun battles and move at a much faster pace. In fact some say too much and Mazzara has left the position of showrunner for season 4 to be replaced by Scott Gimple (who has written some of the best episodes of the show including 18 miles out and Clear).
But yeah most fans of the Walking Dead admit that the first half of season 2 is very slow so if you made it through that part and still enjoyed it then you doing fine. The 2nd half of season 2 and season 3 move much more like an action movie where as the first half of season 2 moves like a soap opera.
Its my favorite show mainly because it is a "Southern", basically a Western set in the South. Also it films really close to where I live, if I have a free summer weekend (and being a teacher I have a lot of summer free time) I like to take the 90 minute drive just to maybe talk to an actor or see some filming. Being that it is a combination to me of a good Western (here of course the Walkers fill the plot device that Indians do in classic westerns), a piece of Southern Gothic Literature, and of course the action/gun play is what makes it my favorite show.
But yeah the Comic itself and the show both greatly resemble a Steven King work but they also are basically post modern versions of Southern Gothic Literature. Most of the stuff that isn't zombie related - Depressing themes, Southern setting, flawed characters, death, etc these are all big components of Southern Gothic Literature. In fact oddly enough The Green Mile is also a piece of SGL in that way as well. Supernatural elements are also usually a part of SGL.
Its fascinating that two big parts of American Culture - Southern Gothic Literature and Blues (not to mention its descendant Rock music) both spring from the Great Depression. And now here we are in the longest prolonged downturn since the Great Depression and this show with its backing comic, its setting, its tone (life sucks and then you die) and its music is basically History repeating itself.
The use of a lot of independent blues artist for this show does a great job setting its tone.
(And PS that was all my original explanation) The fandom itself hates certain characters and to extent you are supposed to. No one likes Lori nor does anyone really like the way the show did with Andrea. Granted she is a Darabont person so with he no longer attached she has no reason to hang around. And the show has departed so much from the Comic while still keeping most of the settings and the themes the deaths are mixed up greatly. This makes watching the show worthwhile because you can't just read the comic and know whats happening. Its basically a mirror universe now.
But the characters being flawed is what makes the show so great. My favorite character is Merle, Daryl's brother.
I carry my hunting knife (a four inch bladed knife) in a leather case on my belt most places (expect when I am teaching). Not because I think Zombies are going to start attacking but it comes in handy to have with me. Also I can take it more places than I can my .357 revolver which is my carry gun.
