Pairi Daiza the worlds first!!!

Thanks, for the information, it will be something to look forward to, I'm wondering how do they construct exhibits for these birds, do they try to simulate their african habitiat?

the 3rd egg hatched yesterday. this one was incubated and the chick will be be the first parent raised shoebill in captivity. that is, if all goes well ...

@ dragon(ele)nerd: the paradisio enclosure is netted, several meters high, with about 1/4 to 1/3 covered with water. the land part is heavily planted. visitors can see the animals from the other side of the water (distance of about 4-5 meters) or from an elevated platform.

prague has theirs off exhibit, but from what I understand they are kept in much smaller enclosures. Ueno and san diego have a somewhat similar exhibit like paradisio. at least, that's the impression I get from pics.

I do too, hope everyone goes well, thanks also for the exhibit layout forumbully,

Too bad that the park of Paradisio doesn"t go more to the media with this...
It is even a search for update's on there own site, Parc Paradisio - Laissez-vous toucher par la nature!

We can follow it thanks to the Friend of Paradisio here (forumbully), but "normal" people that doesn"t read forums don't. A missed opportunity of the park

Couldn't agree more with you, worlds first breedings these days are few and far between especially with such a large and spectacular animal.
Maybe when the chicks are perhaps at an age that may be deemed safe or secure they will be presented to the media?

strange, because when I go to their site. right on the home page on the right side, there's a header saying: INFO PARADISIO. with the most recent news of course (keep in mind that the first chicks are over 1 month old by now) but under that big header is a button "alle informatie" (all information, for those who don't even understand that much dutch :p ) where you can easily find a very large press release.

the same press release, I might add, that has been sent to most dutch, french and even english speaking newsagencies.

reason why there isn't a fuss about this one is quite simple. there is a fuss about it, but only in the zoo world. it isn't a premier anymore, even though this one is going to be parent-reared (fingers crossed) and the others are not.

@ safariman: be patient, they'll come ...

The dutch version of the site doesn"t give any update's about the birds at all, the French version does it well. The update is from middle August, you would think that they would updated the whole site now ;)

Because i surfed at the French site now, i saw the little one's their update for the first time (from Paradisio itself then, from forumbully we saw it earlyer)

And about the one that's is born outside? Nowhere on the side is anything of that. A shame for Paradisio. In the news i didn"t heared anything about it also. And it is in my country that the bird is born...
I hoped that some papers would report it...

But like i said, a fansite is much more accurate for news ;) :) We are glad to see/hear the update's from you :)

well, as you are always talking about how little flemish visitors they have, you, of all people shouldn't be so surprised to be neglected.
:p

anyway, you're right that we're always quicker with most of the news, but that's because we're not an external company that handles dozens of websites.

Auwch, that hurts :p But it is so true

The site of Paradisio is held by an external firm?

That is new for me, mostly (i thought) a Zoo buys a website, so that they can modify simple things like news by themselves... But defimedia doest all off these things for the park then?

If the changed the site, perhaps more dutch speaking people will come.

:D I'm not even going to dignify that with an answer, but you're always welcome to go to the park entrance and count.

but as I said a little higher
either way, this is getting a little off topic.
I'll see if we can get some shoebill pics online tonight
