The zoo YOU want

Im 14 years old. I want to become a zoologist. Owning a zoo is a life long dream for me. I do loads of volounteer work for animal charities. I have lizards, snakes, tortoises, finches and exotic fish. No one ever beleivs that i will own and run my own zoo. I want to prove them wrong. I spend all my time making species lists and zoo maps. I usually change my mind about what type of zoo i want to run. But as i said im only 14 and my ideas are not set in stone yet. I will post more tomorow

Heck, I had my zoo planned out since I was 12 and I am still sticking to the plan. I never change my mind. I already know I want a Zoo cut up into Biomes with themed exhibets. Also, I encourage you to "prove them wrong!" Don't let anyone tell you that you will not play a part in saving the worlds animals!

I have notebooks and maps too! I've gone through 5 full zoos, and I'm on my sixth design. I get closer and closer each time, and I'm finally solidifying my ideas, but it's taken awhile. I keep a notebook with journal entries about ethics, design, and human opinions about animals as well as animal lists and maps. I also plan to have a zoo when I get out of college (I'm 17)--medium-sized, focus on "target" animals, or those that are hated and/or feared. I'll do a huge post once I finish Animalia 6, but good luck!

What I like about this thread is that it's ambitious (in a good way!) and you are being honest with yourselves and not choosing hirola for an Africa exhibit.

Nothing too unrealistic about wanting to own a zoo, so long as you have a good plan. You'd likely have to start out small, but it's possible. Good luck!

I had thoughts about going into zoology, marine biology or botany when I was a teen, but as a lazy, rebellious and irresponsible student I didn't have the kinds of marks or course background a university would require for applicants to science programs (amusingly, I am now a teacher).

Now that I'm 30 I suppose I could get into such a program as a mature student, but my time is occupied with work and family. I will compromise with my young dreams by becoming a farmer in the future (will be inheriting my wife's family farm in Northern Japan once her parents retire, and will soon be moving there to learn the business).

That said, I'd like to give you some advice. Anything that people tell you is impossible is exceedingly worth doing. Example: everyone told me I was a fool for planning to move to Japan, offering me "helpful" lists of examples of why it would never work out. I have now lived in Japan for four years, and had effectively achieved my life's goal while in my 20s. I will likely be here for the rest of my days and have nothing but opportunities going into the future.

If your dream is to start a zoo then that is what you will have to do. Expect it to be hard work, full of surprises and disappointments and people throwing barriers at you at every step. In spite of all that, however, think of the reward if you succeed - not only to yourself but to the animals you could help to conserve.

Good luck! Show everyone else that they do not control your future.
