There are 58 species from 35 genera represented in the Zoochat galleries.


The family is divided into (at least) seven subfamilies, which I have listed below with their component genera.

Three species in three genera: Desmodus, Diaemus, Diphylla

Two species are represented in the Zoochat galleries, from the genera Desmodus and Diaemus.


Glossophaginae
Long-tongued and Long-nosed Bats

About 45 species in fourteen genera: Anoura, Choeroniscus, Choeronycteris, Glossophaga, Hylonycteris, Leptonycteris, Lichonycteris, Lionycteris, Lonchophylla, Monophyllus, Musonycteris, Platalina, Scleronycteris, Xeronycteris

There are nine species in the Zoochat galleries, representing six genera: Anoura, Choeroniscus, Glossophaga, Hylonycteris, Leptonycteris, Lonchophylla.

Caribbean Flower Bats

Four species in two genera: Erophylla, Phyllonycteris

Two species are represented in the Zoochat galleries, both from the genus Erophylla.

Big-eared Bats, Spear-nosed Bats, False Vampire Bats, etc

About 45 species in seventeen genera: Chrotopterus, Gardnerycteris, Glyphonycteris, Lampronycteris, Lonchorhina, Lophostoma, Macrophyllum, Macrotus, Micronycteris, Mimon, Neonycteris, Phylloderma, Phyllostomus, Tonatia, Trachops, Trinycteris, Vampyrum

There are seventeen species in the Zoochat galleries, representing thirteen genera: Chrotopterus, Gardnerycteris, Glyphonycteris, Lampronycteris, Lonchorhina, Lophostoma, Macrotus, Micronycteris, Mimon, Phyllostomus, Tonatia, Trachops, Trinycteris.

About 100 species in nineteen genera: Ametrida, Ardops, Ariteus, Artibeus, Centurio, Chiroderma, Ectophylla, Enchisthenes, Mesophylla, Phyllops, Platyrrhinus, Pygoderma, Sphaeronycteris, Stenoderma, Sturnira, Uroderma, Vampyressa, Vampyriscus, Vampyrodes

There are twenty-two species in the Zoochat galleries, representing eleven genera: Artibeus, Centurio, Chiroderma, Ectophylla, Mesophylla, Platyrrhinus, Sturnira, Uroderma, Vampyressa, Vampyriscus, Vampyrodes.

The other extant species in the genus is the Southern Stripe-headed Round-eared Bat Tonatia maresi. The species Tonatia saurophila was originally described from subfossil material in Jamaica. The populations in Central and South America were treated as the same species, but more recently have been split as full species (T. bakeri and T. maresi). The Jamaican species (T. saurophila) is believed to be entirely extinct. T. saurophila has also formerly been included within T. bidens.

At least 23 species, of which only five or six are represented in the Zoochat galleries. The subgenus Dermanura may be separated as a full genus by some authors.



Jamaican Fruit Bat Artibeus jamaicensis
Currently about six subspecies are recognised: jamaicensis, parvipes, paulus, richardsoni, triomylus, yucatanicus. Other former subspecies have been split as full species. The subspecies fallax, grenadensis, hercules and trinitatis are now placed in the species Artibeus planirostris.

There is a lot of confusion in the literature about these taxa, whether it is a single species or two separate species. I have just lumped them together here because there seems to be little consensus on the matter.
