The Zoochat Photographic Guide To Cetaceans

Kakapo

Well-Known Member
The cetaceans are a very famous group of mammals that are entirely adapted to aquatic life. Unfortunately, cetacean diversity is extremely low in captivity, and observation of many species in the wild is also very difficult. As a result the Zoochat galleries are very far from complete as compared with the mammals represented in other threads.

However, despite this, 63 out of 97 species are pictured in the thread (albeit three only by taxidermy or preserved specimens), and the only family not represented is Cetotheriidae (the Pygmy Right Whale Caperea marginata).

Of course thanks are given to all the hard-working photographers who make these threads (and any future threads) possible. The list of members whose photos have been used in this thread is here on page 6: The Zoochat Photographic Guide To Cetaceans

PLATANISTIDAE
South Asian River Dolphins

One or two species, in a single genus.

Taxonomic note: originally all the "river dolphins" (Pontoporiidae, Iniidae, Lipotidae) were lumped together in this family.

Platanista
One or two species.

Typically treated as a single species, Platanista gangetica, but the two subspecies have been variably split at times. In 2021 genetic studies resulted in a split back into the two species as presented here.

ZIPHIIDAE
Beaked Whales

About twenty-four species in six genera.

The whales of this family are poorly-known deepwater species which spend little time at the surface. Several species are known only from scant skeletal remains or beached specimens.

Only three species from three genera are represented in the Zoochat galleries by live specimens, and one further species by a taxidermy specimen. There are photos of skeletal material of some additional species (in the genera Berardius and Mesoplodon) but these are not included here.

INIIDAE
Amazonian River Dolphins

One to four species, in a single genus.

Taxonomic note: the La Plata Dolphin Pontoporia blainvillei (now placed in its own family, Pontoporiidae) was formerly included within the family Iniidae, and prior to that both of these families were lumped in Platanistiidae..

Inia
One to four species.

Traditionally treated as a single species (Inia geoffrensis) with three subspecies (boliviensis, geoffrensis, humboldtiana). Recently these have been split by various authors into three full species, with a fourth species described as well (Inia araguaiaensis), but consensus is lacking and genetic studies are contradictory. In this thread they have been retained as subspecies for the sake of simplicity. The taxa boliviensis, geoffrensis and humboldtiana are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

If they are split then the four species would be as follows:

Araguaian River Dolphin Inia araguaiaensis
Bolivian River Dolphin Inia boliviensis
Amazon River Dolphin Inia geoffrensis
Orinoco River Dolphin Inia humboldtiana

Amazon River Dolphin or Boto Inia geoffrensis
Subspecies as discussed above.
