The Zoochat Photographic Guide To Cetaceans

Choose the one that you prefair. I've selected one just because you asked me to do that, but if you like more the other go for it.

No my mistake, I wanted your opinion as well since I have too much trouble deciding!

Feresa
Pygmy killer whales
One species recognized.

Pygmy killer whale Feresa attenuata
Monotypic.
No photos of this species have been uploaded to the Gallery yet. (If my dream comes true, I will be able to photograph it at Okinawa aquarium... but it's still unrealistic)

Just got back from Mississippi and this won't be true for long...

Endless thanks to @devilfish for showing me this article:
Rescued Beach Whale Identified as a Pygmy Killer Whale - WXXV 25
Really appreciate it! New Cetaceans are my favorite species to add!

@Kakapo Not sure if Mississippi is more feasible than Okinawa for you ??

Photos now up in the "USA Other" gallery!! (Also could a Moderator move these photos to the proper gallery after it is created)

@Kakapo would you like to select a photo for this thread?

Thanks, Giant Eland. (I die of envy!)
I like this photo the most:

I wonder what are these strange markings on the skin. Failed shark bites?

@Kakapo I've uploaded photos of Heaviside's Dolphins, Brydes Whale, Long-beaked Common Dolphin, Dusky Dolphin and Southern Right Whale to South African Wildlife. The first two are not yet represented in the gallery. Choose any photos you like for a Moderator to add into the guide.

Additionally would it be possible for a Moderator to add a Pygmy Killer Whale photo into the guide- @Kakapo you now have two choices as @RatioTile has also added photos which are quite nice!

Giant Eland, I leave you the decision of choose the one you like more :) and for the pygmy killer whale, moderators can choose whatever :)

I have added all these into the thread.

I won't change these unless @Kakapo wants them changed.

Note I posted a link to a paper a page or two back about how Long-beaked and Short-beaked Common Dolphins are genetically identical.

Orcinus
Killer whale
One species recognized.

Killer whale Orcinus orca
Taxonomic note: Three to five types of orcas exist, that are consideres as races, varieties, subspecies or even species, but they're not recognized as named taxa yet.
Monotypic.

If you wanted to showcase the different types just in case, there should be a few represented on the forum.

For example, I have photographs uploaded of an individual from the Icelandic population, and of an individual from the Northern Pacific Resident population.

Cetacean database website (and even cetacean focused zoo anti websites...) can be used to identify the origins of most, if not all captive orca. Due to captive breeding, a lot of these animals are hybrids between populations now; there's quite a few partially descended from the near-extinct Southern Pacific Resident population.

Pontoporia
La Plata dolphins
One species

La Plata dolphin Pontoporia blainvillei
Taxonomic note: When I first met this species it was called Stenodelphis blainvillei. Looks like that Pontoporia (1846) was published a year before Stenodelphis (1847) and hence have priority.
Monotypic.
No photos of this species have been uploaded to the Gallery yet.

Key word….”yet”

@Chlidonias, I believe you've updated this guide in the past and @Kakapo isn't active anymore. I've since added photos for:
Bermiester's Porpoise Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoena spinipinnis) - ZooChat
Bolivian River Dolphin Bolivian river dolphin (Inia boliviensis) - ZooChat
La Plata Dolphin La Plata dolphin or franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei) - ZooChat
Dwarf Sperm Whale Dwarf Sperm Whale (Kogia sima) - ZooChat
(2 new families!)

Let me know if you can add these :)
I have gone through the whole thread and spruced it up a bit so it's more in line with the other Photographic Guides which will make it easier to keep it updated. Lots more photos have been added and others replaced, some taxonomy modified or annotated, and the new species have been added in.

There are now 59 species of cetaceans pictured out of the 97 species in the thread, which is over two-thirds of them (albeit three are only shown by taxidermy or preserved specimens), and the only family not represented is Cetotheriidae (the Pygmy Right Whale Caperea marginata). The main stumbling block for better representation are the beaked whales.

The total list of species as they are presented in the thread. The ones with asterisks in front of the name are those which are depicted by photos.
