I've been a little run-down and lacking in motivation over the last month or two, hence a lack of new photographic guides from myself and no more posts in my Last Chance Saloon thread; as such I thought a nice simple guide to owls might get my creative juices flowing again ;)

As far as taxonomy goes, I will largely be following the model found in Konig & Weick (2009) and Mikkola (2013) with more recent developments noted where possible. There is at least one instance where I have strong reason to suspect that a species commonly claimed to occur in captivity represents, in point of fact, another closely related taxon - I'll get to this anon.

Eurasian Barn Owl (Tyto alba)

American Barn Owl (Tyto furcata)

Anybody can comment on the origin of so-called Sao Tome Island Barn Owls in captivity? They are in a number of small collections in Germany. They would be the only endemic from Sao Tome island present in captivity. Is it possible they are misidentified, perhaps a color mutant of one of other races of Barn Owl?

Never been certain on the matter myself; as yet I have not been able to see them in person so cannot judge the matter fully.

I do know they originally arrived in Germany via a private keeper based in Bavaria who does/did have a lot of other oddities, and they look more or less right for the species, so the prospect of their being genuine cannot be ruled out. However, equally the possibility they are melanistic T. a. affinis also cannot be ruled out - although some I have spoken to have suggested this is all T. thomensis is anyhow!
