The Zoochat Photographic Guide to Parrots

Psilopsiagon
Two species.

Previously in the genus Bolborhynchus.

Mountain Parakeet Psilopsiagon aurifrons
Four subspecies: aurifrons, margaritae, robertsi, rubrirostris.

Found in mostly-open or lightly-wooded montane habitats in the Andes: aurifrons is from central Peru; margaritae is from southern Peru through Bolivia to northern Chile and northwestern Argentina; robertsi is from Peru's Rio Maranon Valley; and rubrirostris is from northwestern Argentina and central Chile.

Zootierliste treats most of the birds in European zoos as "non-subspecific" but just based on colouration they are the nominate aurifrons.

Sierra or Grey-hooded Parakeet Psilopsiagon aymara
Monotypic.

Found in the mountains from central Bolivia to northwest Argentina.

Touit
Eight species.

None of these species are normally found in aviculture (most are entirely unknown in captivity, other than perhaps being kept locally in South America), and none are represented by photos in the Zoochat galleries.

Lilac-tailed or Seven-coloured Parrotlet Touit batavicus
Monotypic.

Found from the Guianas and northern Brazil, west to northern Venezuela; also found on the island of Trinidad.

Red-fronted Parrotlet Touit costaricensis
Monotypic.

Found in Costa Rica and western Panama.

Blue-fronted Parrotlet Touit dilectissimus
Monotypic.

Found from central Panama to Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.

Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet Touit huetii
Monotypic.

Found in Amazonia, in Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, and the Guianas.

Brown-backed Parrotlet Touit melanotus
Monotypic.

Endemic to southeast Brazil.

Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet Touit purpuratus
Two subspecies, purpuratus and viridiceps.

Found across northern South America, with purpuratus from the Guianas, northern Brazil and southern Venezuela; and viridiceps from northern Brazil across to Peru and Ecuador.

Spot-winged or Brown-shouldered Parrotlet Touit stictopterus
Monotypic.

Found from central Colombia to Ecuador and Peru.

Golden-tailed Parrotlet Touit surdus
Two subspecies, ruficauda and surdus.

Endemic to Brazil, with ruficauda in the northeast and surdus in the southeast.

And that is the completed Zoochat Photographic Guide to Parrots.

In this thread there are about 400 species in 98 genera, of which 302 species from 86 genera are represented by photos. There is currently a total of 548 photos in the thread, from 96 Zoochat members.

[I will keep this tally updated whenever photos are added / removed / changed. Last edit 30 November 2025]

One species can be removed from the list ; just uploaded a photo of a Josephine's lorikeet - Charmosyna josephinae and with this also the complete genus is now represented in our Gallery.
It's realy strange that this species was sofar not represented in our Gallery because the species is still kept in the private hobby and at one public collection in Europe ( Vogelpark Turnersee ). In the recent past it was kept at several well-visited German collections ( Krefeld, Leipzig and at Walsrode were it was even bred and were I took care for it ). At the London Zoo it was kept untill 1997.
The photo I uploaded can be found at the "Animals at Shows" Gallery.

That's great, thanks.

Most of the species not depicted in the galleries are either very rare or non-existent in aviculture, but there are still a few which are kept in Europe or North America which haven't had photos uploaded yet.

Pacific or Nicaraguan Green Conure Psittacara strenuus
Monotypic.

Has also been treated as a subspecies of P. holochlorus.

Found from southern Mexico to Guatemala and Nicaragua.

There are no photos of this species in the Zoochat galleries.

And again one more species sofar not represented in the Gallery, the Pacific or Nigaraguan conure - Psittacara strenuus. There were sevral captive birds offered by several breeders on this market so the species is avaible - at least in Europe.

Maroon-tailed or Black-tailed Conure Pyrrhura melanura
Four subspecies: berlepschi, chapmani, melanura, souancei. The Choco Conure P. pacifica was formerly treated as a subspecies. Some authors would also split off chapmani and souancei as separate species.

P. m. berlepschi is from southeastern Ecuador and eastern Peru; chapmani is from central Colombia; melanura is from the Upper Amazon basin; and souancei is from southern Colombia and eastern Ecuador.

There are no photos of this species in the Zoochat galleries.

And again we can add a new species to the Photographic Guide : just uploaded a photo of a pair of Maroon-tailed conures in the 'Animals at Shows' Gallery. Not realy a price-winning photo but evenso... the species is now represented :).

Grey-headed Parakeet Psittacula finschii
Monotypic. Formerly treated as a subspecies of P. himalayana.

Found from northeast India across Burma and Thailand to southern China and Indochina.

There are no photos of this species in the Zoochat galleries.

And again one more species represented in the Gallery, just uploaded a photo of a pair of Grey-headed ( or Finsch's ) parakeets which I saw on a bird-market earlier this year.

Do you have any photos showing the whole bird including the full tail?

The photos in the galleries mostly look like the nominate P. e. emma (with white eye-ring), but there is at least one with a grey eye-ring which is characteristic of the subspecies auricularis.
Studies say that the colour of the eye-ring is variable through sunlight. Birds kept inside tend to have a white ring, while outside it's black. Whether the captive population is of one subspecies or unpure, or if the subspecies should be considered valid at all, is still a matter of debate.
Source: Pyrrhura emma emma en Pyrrhura emma auricularis

Photo by @Goura at Jurong Bird Park (Singapore) - subspecies rupicola.
On what is this based? The Dutch cooperation of Pyrrhura breeders claims that the nominate subspecies has not entered the European trade and all so-called rupicola rupicola are selective bred sandiae. Even if the subspecies is valid in this case, how was this animal identified?

The link won't let me copy the text to translate. Are you saying that the eye-rings are black and not white or grey?

I'll just remove one of the photos from the thread because I had question marks after them anyway with regards to the subspecies.

I don't actually remember - I assume I read it somewhere but it could also have been an error. Are you saying here that past holders (e.g. on ZTL) are also not nominate? There are a couple of photos on Zoochat from 2010 from Heppenheim.
