The Zoochat Photographic Guide to Rodents: part two

Ondatrini (Muskrat) is the eighth Tribe from Arvicolinae. It contains just one species, which is depicted below.

Muskrat Ondatra zibethicus
Sixteen subspecies have been described based on morphology and distribution, but genetic studies have been limited: albus, aquilonius, bernardi, cinnamominus, goldmani, macrodon, mergens, obscurus, occipitalis, osoyoosensis, pallidus, ripensis, rivalicius, spatulatus, zalophus, zibethicus

Which subspecies is in Wisconsin? I have photos of that one.

Neotominae (North American rats and mice)

About 125 species in sixteen genera: Baiomys, Habromys, Hodomys, Isthmomys, Megadontomys, Nelsonia, Neotoma, Neotomodon, Ochrotomys, Onychomys, Osgoodomys, Peromyscus, Podomys, Reithrodontomys, Scotinomys, Xenomys

Only twelve species are represented in the Zoochat galleries, from five genera (Baiomys, Neotoma, Onychomys, Peromyscus and Reithrodontomys).

There are three subfamilies of exclusively New World rodents in Cricetidae: Neotominae (c.125 spp), Tylominae (11 spp), and Sigmodontinae (c.375 spp). There is some dispute about how best to arrange these three groups. Some authors would combine them all under one subfamily (Sigmodontinae); others split them into three subfamilies. I have followed the latter course and split them in three.

The subfamily Neotominae is divided into four Tribes:

Baiomyini (American pigmy mice and singing mice)
Four species in two genera: Baiomys, Scotinomys

One species is depicted here, from the genus Baiomys.

Neotomini (woodrats and pack rats)
About 24 species in four genera: Hodomys, Nelsonia, Neotoma, Xenomys

Two species are depicted here, from the genus Neotoma.

Ochrotomyini (Golden Mouse)
One species, in the genus Ochrotomys

The single species is not depicted here.

Reithrodontomyini (deer mice and American harvest mice)
About 95 species in nine genera: Habromys, Isthmomys, Megadontomys, Neotomodon, Onychomys, Osgoodomys, Peromyscus, Podomys, Reithrodontomys

Nine species are depicted here, from the genera Onychomys, Peromyscus and Reithrodontomys.

In the following posts the genera will be presented as per the above (alphabetically within individual Tribes).

Neotoma
About twenty species, two of which are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

White-throated Woodrat Neotoma albigula
Seven subspecies: albigula, brevicauda, laplataensis, mearnsi, seri, sheldoni, venusta. The subspecies melanura from northwest Mexico was split as a cryptic species in 2015. Until 2001 the White-toothed Woodrat Neotoma leucodon was lumped into N. albigula hence the numbers of subspecies often quoted for the latter species (up to 15).

Mexican Woodrat Neotoma mexicana
Southern Plains Woodrat Neotoma micropus
Nelson's Woodrat Neotoma nelsoni
Bolanos Woodrat Neotoma palatina
Sonoran Woodrat Neotoma phenax
Stephens' Woodrat Neotoma stephensi

The following three taxa are now extinct. They were all endemic to small islands off Baja California and are thought to have been wiped out by introduced cats. They may be treated as full species or (as the IUCN does) as subspecies of the extant Neotoma bryanti:

Anthony's Woodrat Neotoma anthonyi (from the Todos Los Santos islands; last seen in 1926).

Bunker's Woodrat Neotoma bunkeri (known only from a series of specimens collected in 1931 from the Coronados Islands).

San Martin Island Woodrat Neotoma martinensis (from San Martin Island; last seen in the 1950s).

Cactus Mouse Peromyscus eremicus
At least 15 subspecies have been used for P. eremicus but in 2000 the Northern Baja Deer Mouse Peromyscus fraterculus was split off as a full species which complicated matters. Mammals of Mexico lists nine subspecies for P. eremicus and six for P. fraterculus, although they were only considering those which are found in Mexico (both species also occur in the southern USA).

North American Deer Mouse Peromyscus maniculatus
Almost 70 subspecies have been named, and it is known that some occur sympatrically without interbreeding or have distinct habitat preferences; it is almost certainly a species complex.

A 2019 paper [https://www.researchgate.net/public...S_OF_THE_PEROMYSCUS_MANICULATUS_SPECIES_GROUP] made some headway to making genetic sense of the complex, dividing "Peromyscus maniculatus" into six species, with P. maniculatus covering most of the eastern side of North America and P. sonoriensis most of central and western North America, with additional species P. arcticus and P. keeni in the northwest, P. gambelii in the southwest USA and Baja California, and P. labecula in extreme south USA and most of Mexico.

Under this division of species, the Wisconsin animals depicted below would be the true P. maniculatus; while the Arizona animal may be either P. sonoriensis or P. labecula (the ranges probably meet or overlap), or even the Black-eared Deer Mouse P. melanotis which is morphologically almost identical and also occurs in this area.

Because there are so many species in the genus Peromyscus and because the taxonomy of them is complicated, I have placed them below in their taxonomic clusters rather than just as a basic alphabetical list. Definitely do not take these groupings as definite because the taxonomy is disputed and will certainly change. I have left the species illustrated in the previous post in the list so that their relationships can be seen.

Tylomyinae (New World climbing rats)

Eleven species in four genera: Nyctomys, Otonyctomys, Ototylomys, Tylomys.

Three species from three genera are represented in the Zoochat galleries. The missing genus is Otonyctomys.

The subfamily Tylominae is divided into two Tribes: Nyctomyini with two species in two genera (Nyctomys and Otonyctomys); and Tylomyini with nine species in two genera (Ototylomys and Tylomys).

Because there are so few species I will combine all of them under one post.

There are three subfamilies of exclusively New World rodents in Cricetidae: Neotominae (c.125 spp), Tylominae (11 spp), and Sigmodontinae (c.400 spp). I have followed the latter course and split them in three.

The subfamily Sigmodontinae is divided into eight Tribes as below. There is also the genus Juliomys with four species, which nobody knows where to place.
