The Zoochat Photographic Guide to Rodents: part two

Oecomys
About twenty species, two of which are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

Bicolored Arboreal Rice Rat Oecomys bicolor
Multiple subspecies have been named but it is probably a species-complex given its extremely large distribution. Conversely, some sources treat it as monotypic.

Olive Grass Mouse Abrothrix olivacea
Around ten subspecies. Several former species have been lumped back into this species. The subspecies beata, brachiotus, mochae, olivacea and pencana have always been placed under A. olivacea (or A olivaceus as it was formerly spelled). A. o. tarapacensis is an additional subspecies described in 2006 for the northern part of the range of A. o. olivacea. The species A. llanoi, A. mansoensis and A. markhami have all been reduced to subspecies of A. olivacea. The former southern species A. xanthorhinus (which had two subspecies, canescens and xanthorhinus) has also been lumped into A. olivacea as although they are visually and behaviourally distinct, genetically they differ little.

Graomys
Four or more species, one of which is represented in the Zoochat galleries.

This genus has a complex taxonomic history. Currently four species are normally recognised (G. centralis, G. domorum, G. edithae, G. griseoflavus). Other species which have been or may be recognised are G. taterona (usually synonymised with G. domorum); and G. cachinus, G. chacoensis, G. lockwoodi, and G. medius (the last four generally treated as synonyms of G. griseoflavus). Different studies result in different opinions on which are synonyms and which are valid species.

Kind of wish I'd never started on Rodents, to be honest...

As of this post I am almost 900 species through Myomorpha, and only 55 species have photographs. I knew there would be a poor turn-out for this group but I didn't really think it would be that poor!

There is only one more family to go - Muridae - which is another 700-odd species. But my fingers need to rest for a while.

I liked the Rodent House at Berlin Tierpark. It was little more than two garden sheds joined together, but had an interesting collection of small mammals and was a relatively cheap building. It is a shame that relatively few species of rodents are shown in zoos. Some species could have been saved from extinction and a collection of interesting species could be kept in the space currently occupied by a second meerkat enclosure in many zoos.

Peromyscus
About 55 species, of which five are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

Cactus Mouse Peromyscus eremicus
At least 15 subspecies have been used for P. eremicus but in 2000 the Northern Baja Deer Mouse Peromyscus fraterculus was split off as a full species which complicated matters. Mammals of Mexico lists nine subspecies for P. eremicus and six for P. fraterculus, although they were only considering those which are found in Mexico (both species also occur in the southern USA).

Eight coastal subspecies are known as Beach Mice (allophrys, ammobates, decoloratus [now extinct], leucocephalus, niveiventris, peninsularis, phasma, trissyllepsis).

MURIDAE
Old World or "True" Mice and Rats, Gerbils, and Spiny Mice

About 810 species in about 160 genera.

There are only 105 species from 45 genera represented in the Zoochat galleries.

The largest family in Rodentia, easily beating out Cricetidae (with c.700 spp in c.140 genera). These two families each contain roughly a third of all the rodent species. The family is found only in the Old World (Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia), although various commensal species have been introduced to the Americas. Various other families or parts of other families have formerly been placed under Muridae, including the Nesomyidae and all or part of Cricetidae.

The family Muridae is divided into five subfamilies:

Deomyinae (spiny mice and brush-furred rats) - about 55 species in four genera (Acomys, Deomys, Lophuromys, Uranomys)

Twelve species are depicted here, from three genera: Acomys, Deomys, and Lophuromys.

Gerbillinae (gerbils and jirds) - about 100 species in 16 genera (Ammodillus, Brachiones, Desmodilliscus, Desmodillus, Dipodillus, Gerbilliscus, Gerbillurus, Gerbillus, Meriones, Microdillus, Pachyuromys, Psammomys, Rhombomys, Sekeetamys, Tatera, Taterillus)

Thirty species are depicted here, from eleven genera: Ammodillus, Desmodillus, Dipodillus, Gerbilliscus, Gerbillurus, Gerbillus, Meriones, Pachyuromys, Psammomys, Rhombomys, Sekeetamys.

Leimacomyinae (Togo Mouse) - one species, in the genus Leimacomys

This species is not depicted here.

Lophiomyinae (Maned Rat) - one species, in the genus Lophiomys

Depicted.

Acomys
About twenty species, ten of which are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

This genus has had a complex history, with anywhere from ten to thirty species being recognised, and taxa being shuffled about as subspecies or full species. Currently there are about twenty species considered valid.

Cairo or Egyptian Spiny Mouse Acomys cahirinus
Five subspecies are "provisionally" recognised in Mammals of Africa by Kingdon: cahirinus, helmyi, hunteri, megalodus, viator. Many others have been used at other times, and it has also been combined with A. dimidiatus.
