Potamogale


Giant Otter-shrew (Potamogale velox)

The range of this species extends throughout the Congo Basin, from the extreme southeast of Nigeria, east to western Uganda and south to northern Angola, southern DRC and northwest Zambia; a disjunct population exists in the Kakamega Forest of southwest Kenya.

Monotypic.

I think the NHM in London has a stuffed otter-shrew, I'm surprised no one has uploaded a photo of that.

There is indeed a photograph of the mount in question within the gallery, but as I prefer to avoid taxidermy specimens in these threads (and it is horrifically faded, given the living animal is dark brown and the taxidermy specimen is pale blonde) I chose to omit it :P
 
The NHM's otter shrew is still classified in an Insectivora section,rather than with the elephants, hyraxes and sirenians in an adjoining room.
