They are!By the way, I think Asiatic black bears are rarer in American zoos than giant pandas. They're the only species of ursine I've never seen in the flesh.

Yeah, I suppose that there is a 40% possibility. By the way, I think Asiatic black bears are rarer in American zoos than giant pandas. They're the only species of ursine I've never seen in the flesh.
Do you why that is?They are!
Quite the contrast here. Growing up going to the Toledo Zoo, they were one of my first. In Europe, unsurprisingly, panda was one of the first bear species I ever saw. Sloth bear was actually the final outstanding bear on my list up until December 2017.
Not sure. I know the AZA phased them out, but I don't know why they aren't more common in non-AZA zoos.Do you why that is?
There are ~8 zoos in the US with Asian Black Bears. Not sure. I know the AZA phased them out, but I don't know why they aren't more common in non-AZA zoos.

Why did they decide to do away with them as opposed to the suns, sloths, and Andeans? Not sure. I know the AZA phased them out, but I don't know why they aren't more common in non-AZA zoos.
They were/are all old, and could most could/can no longer breed. I guess they didn't want to bring in any more, so they were added to the phase-out list. A shame, Ursus thibetanus is a cool species. Why did they decide to do away with them as opposed to the suns, sloths, and Andeans?
Really? That's too bad. Guess I better get my butt to Cleveland if they still have them.Suns are currently on the phase out list, too, so they won’t be around for too much longer.
It was mine!I have a feeling that American Black Bear was my last bear species.
Sun Bear - Chester, whenever they arrived
I should have clarified more. This was the biggest iPad I have ever seen and the person using it was blocking everyones way.
Yeah, sorry. I just had a question I had been wanting to ask for a while back there.I hate to break it to everyone, but we are getting a bit off-course with this thread's purpose. This thread is supposed to tell ZooChatters your major pet peeves in zoos, but it seems like it's now gone to people posting about where and when they've seen species of bears. To be honest, let's get this thread back to its original purpose.
