Yep calling apes monkeys is the biggest thing that irritates me when it comes to animals. I mean, half the time there is a sign saying that they are not monkeys.

This next one is mainly the zoo's fault but this is what happened in Discovery Forest in Cincinnati.

Man: "Hey guys there is a two-toed sloth just dangling over there" (shocked he said this because I have seen Moe like 50 times)
Me: (implying that the sign at the zoo is not fully correct): "Hey thanks. You know that there are two species of two-toed slo-
Man:"Yeah one is the three-toed sloth"

(I continued)

Heh, heh, snicker, giggle...

TAYra Banks... :D :D :D :D It's ok, Moebelle, things like that happen to me all the time.

When the 9th idiot visitor said monkey in the ape house I said out of the corner of my mouth the 10th person that calls them monkeys I will scream.my wish was granted as I let out an ear piercing scream, whilst pointing to the sign........................:mad::mad:The scream fell on deaf ears as did the sign:eek:

Oh, the irony - there's a news item in the UK press today about a school in Birmingham where staff are on strike in a row over badly behaved pupils. One of the parents is reported as saying that the school was 'like a zoo' where children 'run riot'. Not what she meant, but some of us know exactly how it feels to be in a zoo with school children running riot

I'm also rather offended, on behalf of zoo animals, that someone would compare their behaviour to that of rowdy school children.

OMG!

Today it was just coming up to the 7th Monkey comment in the ape house when I am sure the following would irritate or push one over the edge when out of this mouth came 'look at the MONKEY GORILLAS'
I am starting to question my sanity.................:mad:
Dare I say it what next????????????

I've always siad Tay-ra, because that's how it's spelt, and I've never heard it pronounced any differently.

:p

Hix

I believe the correct pronunciation is "Tie-ra". Since none of us know how an animal's name should be pronounced until we hear it for the first time, why don't zoos adopt the very simple idea of explaining on the label the correct pronunciation? Other names the general public almost always get wrong are: Przewalski's Horse, Coati, Gila Monster, Gemsbok, Touraco, Piranha, Kudu. Pudu, Pochard, Fossa, Cichlid. One might also add to that list such animals as Bonobo, Uakari and Hoatzin, if only more zoos had these.

Yes, they are pronounced hee-lah monster and hems-bock, correct?

By the way, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has an entire paragraph in the animal's profile on how Przewalski's is pronounced. :D And how do you mispronounce pirahna, turaco, coati and kudu!?

Oh, see, that's how I've always pronounced it! But just when zooman64 says it's the most easily mispronounced, then I change it because I thought the way I said it was wrong! Ugh... :p

Yes, I pronounce gemsbok as you do, with an "h": "hems-bok".

The correct pronunciation, at the risk of contradiction, of piranha, turaco, coati and kudu is:

Piranha - Pir-ran-ah
Touraco/Turaco - Tour-raa-co
Coati - This is much easier to break down. Pronounced Ko-ar-tee (not, as most zoo visitors seem to think, "coat-ee")
Kudu - Although some will probably dispute this, the first syllable of Kudu should rhyme with "good", as in "could-oo".

Wait, coati is co-are-tee or co-ah-tee? And I'm sorry, I always pronounced it Gems-bock, with the hard g sound like in gum or got.

And kudu is not coo-doo, but could-doo?

The problem here is that people are not using the correct phonemes. The phonemes in coati should be c/oa/ar/t/ee

Some other ones that people miss-pronounce.

Langur-LAHN-goor

Sifaka-SHEE-fak or SHEE-fak-ah

Aye-aye-Eye-eye (can't believe people don't get this because everyone knows "Aye-aye captain")

Galago-GUH-lay-GOH

Genet- JEN-et

Tamarin-Hard TAM-are-in, not TUH-marin

Bonobo-BUH-no-boh

Guenon-G as in gum, GEN-in, or GEE-non, not GWEN-in

Orangutan-Not ORANG-u-tang as people always do

Takin-TAH-kin

Siamang-SIGH-a-mang
